🔥 tell us how you feel about the russo movies
Send me a “ 🔥 “ for an unpopular opinion.
Is this even going to be unpopular I don’t even know.
(Under a read more because this got long. You knew what you were doing when you sent this.)
So, to get it out of the way, when I say Russos I also mean Markus and McFeely but the writers have a symbiotic relationship with the directors so my complains apply to both camps.
The Winter Soldier is great. It’s small, its clean, its focused, it tells a nice story without any major leaps of logic.
Civil War is when we start seeing the weaknesses of the Russo storytelling.
The greatest weakness of Russos is not knowing how to deal with truly powerful, inhuman characters both as characters but also as functions in the story, which results in both the characters acting incredibly stupid, and the plot starting to bend and buckle to side-step the abilities of the said powerful character. It isn’t too egregious in Civil War, which is why that movie is still mostly enjoyable, but you can tell in how Vision spends most of his time in the compound waxing poetically instead of being an active member of the story. (Also I hate their take on Peter but that’s a different rant which you alredy know about)
And then....We get into Infinity War.
The second greatest weakness of Russos is not knowing how to make the plot make sense with the characters they got, so instead they make the characters work for the plot they got, if that makes sense. Which, when mixed with the first aforementioned weakness, makes for a very stupid film that’s concerned with plot first and sensible characters fourth.
-Oh, Vision is the most powerful member of the Avengers alongside Thor and Hulk? Well, Vision gets shanked that makes him conveniently unable to use his powers, Thor has to go on a side quest that directly laughs at his Ragnarok arc, and Hulk is having performance issues! What a coincidink! -What did you say, Thanos is about to lose? Let’s have Star Lord lose his cool and be extremely selfish even though the story of GotG2 was all about him not being selfish! -Thanos is a Mary Sue. His one weakness is LITERALLY caring too much.
Listen I still enjoy Infinity War and Brolin’s performance as Thanos but it very much is a ‘I have to turn my brain off or else I will have an aneurysm’ kind of movie.
I haven’t seen Endgame since its theatrical run so I can’t comment on it that much (I have to do a rewatch....which I’ve been dreading because wHAT DO YOU MEAN ITS THREE HOURS.)
TL:DR Russos are the Bendis of Marvel Movies.
OH WAIT I REMEMBERED ENDGAME HULK EXISTS.
Yeah listen I don’t hate the idea of Professor Hulk, it is a common point Bruce and Hulk reach in the comics, but to do it OFF SCREEN?! And ONLY use him as a joke machine??? There are SO many things you could do with a merged Bruce and Hulk and you focus on NONE of it. (Which, again, Russos don’t know how to deal with powerful characters)
Bless Shang-Chi for reverting him back and I very much hope She Hulk explores Bruce’s actual psyche for once.
Miscellaneous gripes:
-Tony and Peter knew one another for a week at most STOP with the father/son dynamic. -Peter is 17, stop writing him like a 13 year old bimbo. -They didn’t write Far From Home but I blame them for that movie being bad. -What the FUCK do you mean Rhodey makes fun of Thor’s depression. RHODEY?!?!?!?! -Howard Stark was a bad father. Having Good Intentions does not change that fact. Tell me you never had a problematic father without telling me you never had a problematic father. -Why wasn’t Carol a more prominent part of Endgame was she a late script addition because if not, yikes.
