For You, Frances (Pt. 2)
I recently enjoyed a visit from my lovely friend Frances, who won her way into my heart even though we became friends while living in a country with no Costcos. We decided to spend her first night in town at a local gin bar, where every other person there was on a date. I felt so left out, I almost started stroking Frances’ hair just to blend in. Content to be the two single ladies in the bar screaming, “I LOVE THIS SONG,” every time a new Marvin Gaye tune came on, (okay, that was just me), Frances and I started analyzing each date. We don’t have a strict formula yet, but I am pretty sure that there is a positive correlation between the amount of eye contact and the likelihood that there will be, uh, other forms of contact later in the evening.
In the spirit of our night out with Marvin Gaye, I made another chart that shows what I like and dislike… but this time, it could be for someone named FrancIs.
Gentleman caller turn-ons Gentleman caller turn-offs Considerate Smokes Pretty eyes Ignorant Challenges me Lives far away Has a sense of purpose Is ambitious in a way that causes them to be boring - for example, immediately asks "what do you do?" when first meeting someone. Even-tempered Excessive use of the term "baby" Funny Has the same name as a member of my immediate family Deep voice Reminds me of me Gets along with my friends and has friends that I get along with Is impressed by my knowledge of obscure indie rock bands Feminist Drinks to excess Well-traveled Doesn't vote
What I’ve realized since coming up with my chart for friend turn-ons and gentleman caller turn-ons is that the real people get past the qualifications. A relationship is meaningful when I want to see someone regardless of their smoking habits, alarming google search results or pets. Not many people can do that. But when they do, I stay in contact.
