He’s never been the best helmsman. In fact, he’s not a helmsman at all. He can barely find his way around the countless halls and various nooks and crannies of the Grandcypher let alone find his way through the vast and unforgiving skies that stretch out all around them. Not the mention the fact that he doesn’t know the first thing about operating an airship, reading the wind, or navigating through a storm. He knows vague words for pieces and parts he’s seen Rackam tending to or overheard Eugen fixing, but even then he can typically only answer with a shrug and a scrunched up nose that betrays his near constant confusion when it comes to the wonderful world of airships he has no grasp on whatsoever. So, he can’t say he’s surprised when, as a result of an unfortunate series of events (which he really should be used to by now) that had separated him from the crew, he found himself tangled up in a collection of flickering cords, vision clouded by smoke, in the cockpit of a tiny speedrunner crashed on some wayward island he’s never seen or heard of. Inhaling sharply where he lays is a mistake - exhaust and God knows what fumes filtering into his aching lungs as he lets out a strangled wheeze in response. His back is throbbing where it’s shoved up against the side of the seat - armrest digging into his skin trough the fabric of his cloak, and he feels like someone has bent his spine in half.
A huff makes swear-slicked strands of sandy brown hair quiver against his grimy forehead where ash and dust clink to his skin from the sudden, and less than graceful landing. Lips are twisted into a pursed frown as he yanks his legs back inside through shattered windows, mindful of the glass that falls all around him with the motion. Hands detangle themselves from what’s left of the steering wheel so palms can brush against his chest and sides. Thankfully, he appears, physically, no worse for wear than he had been before. Quick thinking and the fact that this far from his first crash making it so he had managed to avoid any serious injuries when the tiny airship, if one could even call it that, had collided with the side of the island. Wrapping his fingers about the the handle beside the caved in back of the ship, he thrust his legs forward with all his might and kicked the shattered door right off of its ailing hinges - the remains flying through the air until they clatter against the ground a few feet away. With it out of the way, he shoves what few supplies had survived the fall into his pockets and climbs, clumsily, out of the airship.
Feet hit what he assumes to be solid ground, but he’s still winded and disoriented from the crash, and the soles of his boots slip and he’s sent rolling down a slight incline. Teeth grit as his already battered body is sent head over feet into a pile of rumble. Yanking his head up from the dirt, he shakes his head - debris flying out from where they had gotten tangled in his hair and a hand moves to press itself against his aching back. Fingers digging into the curve of his spine as he tries to soothe it back into what feels like it should be its proper place. But he pauses mid-crack of his bone as auburn eyes catch sight of what he’s managed to, quite literally, stumble into. Shimmering crystals of countless colors stretch out before him - their beauty made all the more apparent beneath the glare of the setting sun. Lips part in something akin to wonder as his eyes widen at the sight. He quickly scrambles onto clumsy feet, wiping his hands on his pants - blood and grime already staining the fabric from where tiny cuts lined his palms from the fall.
With careful steps, he makes his way over to the cocoon of crystals, awestruck at the sight. Fingers reach out to press against its slick surface and he feels a strange wave of pressure within his chest - a faint, blue light sparking against his skin. One hand remains on the crystals and the other comes to rest in the center of his chest where he can feel his heart beating steadily. This feeling - he wonders, is it a Primal Beast? His connection to Lyria makes him slightly more aware of them than others, but he can’t sense them as she could - a part of him feels like this is a distant warning from her to him, or from the brown feather still nestled in his hair from when the Supreme Primarch had tried to grab hold of him when the speedrunner had started to spiral out of control. But he doesn’t have time to ponder who is trying to reach out to him when a crack forms along those crystal and he’s startled back - leg smacking against a piece of rumble that sends him back onto the ground for what must have been the tenth time that day alone.
