...Xiphophorus hellerii! :D

Or swordtail fish, as they are commonly called. One would think I’d call it “swordtail fish” the most, but no.

When I was a kiddo, I loved to call animals by their scientific names and actually learn the names, but in a poetic irony of  destiny, it didn’t let me to become a biologist, so I do know these more by their scientific name than the common one, but it is totally useless in my case! XD

This is a little sketch I did last weekend but I couldn’t finish because on Sunday I went to vote and I spent almost all day on the voting line.

Even if my life is not what it used to be, I've decided to not give up and keep drawing! Drawing appeases my heart and gives me a hope...a hope and joy to knowing I'm a worthy person, because I can bring joy and a smile to the people who follow my art!

Since a couple of days ago I've been wanting to draw a fish character design. And specially one in particular...the Swordtail fish.

Here some drawings of the male swordfish. On fish usually the male is the most colorful and gorgeous, so it's a lot more fun to draw males heheh. But I will probably do the female to for the comparison.

So, this afternoon after work I spent all my time looking for cool photos of this fish species, and the other days as well; there you got me trying for days to find a find a photo of this fish that was neat enough to see his anatomy traits well, hehe

Because as a marine biology (and animals in general) admirer, I like to take care that my cartoon drawings are accurate with the actual they're based on. At the end I found one that was good enough to work with.

I made some sketches of the poses and at the end I colored the best one.

And this made me remember why drawing marine life is so fun! I sooo adore drawing fish fins! They are so beautiful and organic in shape, so much fun to draw!! ^^

I also enjoyed drawing scales and the coloring, but the tail! The tail was the funniest part! Curious fact, while I've been drawn fish before, this the first time I draw live-bearer fish, so I was very exciting because it was one of the things I really wanted to draw since a long time ago, it was a pleasure and an honor to try to draw his gonopodium.

It was so cool!...hehe

Before I never drew live-bearer fish because I was worried people were going to consider me a weirdo for saying they are fascinating...but they are. I think it's cool the anatomical difference between them and fish that lay eggs on the ground. The use of the gonopodium it's such a witty evolutionary trait! And it's amazing that the female of these fish carries the babies inside her all the time until they hatch.

Hehe sorry! I know I said I wasn't going to overwhelm you with marine biology or acuatic animals free lessons, but I can't help being a dork with marine life XD

Fish are beautiful and graceful, their movements are graceful too, so that's what I tried to portray in these drawings.

Swordtail Fish

The Swordtail <Xiphophorus hellerii> is popular extremely. It is among the prettiest aquarium fish and incredibly hardy. In the open, it comes with an olive green body with red and yellow along the sides and sometimes colorful speckles on its fins. With this coloration, it really is most called the Green Swordtail or the Red Swordtail commonly. However, in captivity, today it’s been bred into the fabulous colors which make it so highly prized.
