I have a brain AU where bumblebee as a sparkling was poached from his home on a neutral colony. These bug aliens had him and upon meeting with Swindle to trade in some fusion cells they handed this crate off to swindle as a gratuity saying. "You metal kind eat this, yes? Tender goods!" They leave him with the create that he opens to find a grubby upset and starving sparkling in. This insectoid race assumed rather shallowly that Cybertronians are also predators like themselves who would gladly eat 'smaller subspecies/their young".

I was a little lazy here or perhaps he changes color when he's older and more autonomous but for many years he shared the same bronze color as Swindle...why make any special purchases for paint when the kid scuffs something when he has plenty of his own around. They can share, it's cheaper.
Swindle almost didn't keep him, was a near thing a few times cause he disguised begrudgingly attachment with dissatisfaction for every alternative placement or foster- eventually he just ...stopped trying to give Bee away.
