I've been busy. You might have noticed.
I've been doing outreach work with unhoused folks since August. That's when I became (more) radicalized and decided that abolishing the police is the only way forward.
Y'all ever seen the kops sweep a camp? It's horrifying. In fact, even the word sweep is disgusting, because people aren't trash to be swept away.
hello tumblr, its me, liz from twitter
today i am using my new cute purple bluetooth keyboard, which I got for my new life on tumblr. it's weird,I'm having to be more thoughtful, and my thumbs and pinkies are starting to hurt, and there's just a lot I don't care for.
i'll be on twitter until it turns to dust, but it will surely be dust soon so
hey! the community TURNED UP for Camp Resolution!! More than 50 people yelled at the Sacramento City Council for more than 90 minutes, and they decided to pause the sweep. it's still annoying - they've paused attacking people and we're supposed to feel grateful. I don't feel grateful to them, but I have so much gratitude for every single person who turned up, or donated, or put any time and effort into making all that possible.
I realized I've started a new shabbos tradition! On Fridays while I'm at work, I've been finding music by Jewish artists to listen to every week. Last week I played some Nimrod Noi, and this week I did the discography of Nissim Black. Lemala is my favorite of his albums so far. Gave me the chills.
I think next I'll be moving on to Moshe Lang and it'll be time to make a Chanukkah playlist and a Shabbos playlist.
We're watching the Dan Levy cooking show, and I'm so disappointed that like in every other cooking show, the Black woman with the accent went home in the third episode. I really thought this show was going to be different. I would like to see the cooking show where the Black women who went home in the third episodes of all the other cooking shows are in the same cooking show, and none of them go home, and we get to see them all invested in and encouraged.
The sweep of the camp today was bad. Really bad. I held a hysterical woman while they trashed all her stuff. Joe Buscaino's deputies were there, and I saw them laugh while this woman was screaming how could they do this to people.
Her medication is gone. Her glasses are gone. Cops were there pretending to care and one of them started complaining to me about how hard these sweeps are FOR HIM. Because, you know, everyone hates them. I asked if that might be because of all the brutality.
Buscaino's deputies threatened to have me arrested when I tried to grab a resident's stuff to save it from being thrown away. We didn't get most of it. We were there and ready to move it, and because it was after 9:30, an arbitrary deadline, we weren't allowed.
This happens every two to three weeks. These people's lives are upended. They are traumatized. Fuck, I'm traumatized by today. But I get to go home to my family and safety and my fucking things.
The sweeps disrupt all the progress these people have made to get off the street. If it were about getting them into permanent housing, they wouldn't be doing it.
I'm so angry and sad. I'm going back tonight to drop off bread, peanut butter, and jelly. They took all their food, too.
