#29: Program music or absolute music?Well.Let me first say that both kinds of music have their merits. I have written both, I have played both, and I respect both. And there is no reason to believe that we cannot have both. But if I must defend one against the other—it has to be program. There is no reason why music cannot be attached to another work, and there is no reason why it cannot have the same emotional power for an audience—if it is written right.

I suppose you could say I was never satisfied with the way most orchestras conducted (ahem) themselves. And the conductors? Mere windmills run by the malfunctioning machinery they called ensembles—even the thought of it is intolerable. Needless to say, I fixed them both. Do you always hear flawless, professional performances nowadays from your orchestras? You’re welcome.

I once owned a manuscript of a flute concerto by Frederick the Great. I really wish I hadn't, now, because my mun will not stop talking about it.

More than a hundred years ago I said I would wait for my last works to be appreciated. Well, I’m still waiting.

#6: Least favorite composer?

I don’t consider any composers my “least favorite.” I just like them less than all the others. ;) Personally I’ve never liked Brahms—I’ve tried to for almost two years now, I’m still trying to, but something about his music is just…there’s this part of me that finds it physically impossible to appreciate. It’s like Beethoven, except not as good. 

#12: Favorite pieceSecond movement of Beethoven’s 7th. Okay, it’s not a standalone piece, but it’s still my favorite. “Ow, my heart” doesn’t even BEGIN to cover it. Some days I can’t even listen to it because it sinks me into a depressive state, but sometimes I have to listen to it because I just need to hear something that beautiful and sad. Really, it’s more like “Ow, my consciousness.”

I still remember some of the pieces I learned when I was a small child, and some of the pieces I learned in middle school choir. Sometimes I still sit down at my faithful Clavinova keyboard and try to play them again. If I can’t remember the whole thing, I just patch it up with improv :3

I used to do two levels of syllabus a year. The first scheduled evaluation was in November, and the second was in February. So for the greater part of the year, I was like “ahhhhhhhh relaxed” and then for a brief three-month period I’d be all “FFUCK FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKCCK” as I crammed down music theory, pieces, etc.
