I want to go into Broadcast Journalism, and I'm torn between NYU and Syracuse University. I know NYU doesn't have a journalism school, and Syracuse's is one of the best, but I'm also trying to weigh in the fact that being in the city it'll be a great place to start a career, and overall NYU is a better school than SU. Can you describe the journalism program here/if it's worth it?
You’re definitely correct saying that NYU doesn’t have a j-school, it’s a department within the College of Arts and Sciences. NYU’s Journalism department is kind of intense though. I started as a Journalism major (you have to double major as a Journalism major, just an fyi) but then transferred into Gallatin but I still study Journalism. What I really like is that the professors work as or have worked as journalists for major publications or stations or organizations and they have some great insights (I can’t say they all do, did, or are because I’ve only taken a few classes but this is from my own experiences). There’s also the opportunity to intern in some high-profile places that are unique to New York City like the Times, NY1, NBC, etc.. I actually got my freelance job from an email sent out by the journalism department.
I’m sure it’s similar in other schools, but as a Journalism major at NYU you’d pick your area of concentration: Journalism (Print/Online or Broadcast) or Media Criticism. You can also look into the Computational/Digital Journalism track which is relatively new. From there you’d take the general 101 classes and then move deeper into your desired area of study with more focused classes.
