Since the Troy Barrett casting announcement is obviously going to be a lot of people's introduction to Charlie Gillespie, and there have probably already been a bunch of posts about Julie and the Phantoms, may I please take this moment to spread my Suze (2023) agenda??
The plot is essentially about the unlikely bond that develops between the titular Suze (Michaela Watkins) and her daughter Brooke's ex-boyfriend Gage (Charlie Gillespie) after Brooke moves away for university, leaving them both behind and lonely. Gage ends up moving in with a reluctant Suze (who never liked him when he was dating Brooke) for reasons that are a spoiler and she grows to realize he's not the careless deadbeat high school dropout he appears to be at first but actually a loveable himbo with a heart of gold (with a really shitty dad and some mental health struggles).
It's very found family in a way, and much more heartfelt, tender and nuanced than I had honestly expected. I promise anyone who watches this film will want to protect Gage at all costs after seeing it, just like I feel for Troy.
