Itβs their own private paradise. A little slice of heaven that theyβve carved out just past the very last farm outside of Wabang. Itβs safe their, for Rhett and Sutter to be themselves, to not worry that people are going to see and talk and judge. Rhett doesnβt have to be filled with panic when his mom comes home from Sunday mass that sheβs going to be telling him about how the entire congregation was talking about him running around with that girl from Nebraska who thinks sheβs a boy and weather or not they should pray for either to return their souls to God. His soul is just fine, full of love, anger and liquor, but it doesnβt need saving.
He can kiss Sutter here, touch him without looking over his shoulder and the best part about it, is that itβs all still safe. It always will be as long as itβs kept secret. Thatβs why he leans back against the blankets, tips his cowboy hat over his eyes and soaks in the warmth of the sun, not moving again until Sutter speaks.
βHow clean do you think that water is? Clean enough to swim in? Looks clean.β He muses, making up his mind before Rhett can even get a word in. βWanna swim with me?β He asks, pulling off his boots and then the white socks underneath, wiggling his sweaty toes in the breeze.
βNot really.β Rhett grumbles from beneath his hat.
βNo?β Sutterβs tone is questioning, like he canβt believe his boyfriend would pass up this opportunity. βWell how about now?β He pulls his white t-shirt up over his head, exposing his chest and the thin scars that sit an inch below his nipples. He still thinks the scars are too red, even two years after the surgery but he tries not to think about it too much. Scars that are too dark seem to be an okay price to pay for happiness.
This seems to get Rhettβs attention at least a little bit. He sits up a bit more, pushes his hat back and his eyes flick over Sutterβs exposed skin with a lick of his lips. βNo dice, Darlinβ,β He smirks.
βYou drive a hard bargain, cowboy,β Sutterβs grins, undoing his belt buckle and sliding the leather through the loops before it falls on the blanket beside him, only breaking his eyes away from Rhett to get the button on his jeans. Then, without words, he slides his boxers down his legs and steps out of them.
Rhett sits up more this time, eyebrows raised. βOkay, you ainβt serious. Youβre not getting into that nasty water buck ass naked.β
βHow do you know the waterβs nasty?β
βHow do you know itβs not?β
Sutter shrugs. βOnly one way to find out,β He takes off then, half walking and half jogging down to the water just in front of them.
βSutter Elijah!β Rhett calls after him like a parent might yet at a small child who refuses to listen.
The smaller man laughs at that, loud, sound carried by the gentle breeze. He wants to make a joke about Rhett being like his momma but she would never call him that. He was still Savannah Sophia to her. βIf you want me to stop, youβre gonna have to make me!β Heβs at the waterβs edge now, but he doesnβt even pause before he runs straight into it, water splashing up all around his body.
βJesus, Mary and Joseph.β Rhett grumbles quietly but he gets up and starts peeling off his own clothes, ready to follow his man anywhere, even suspicious water.
βLook whoβs βBuck ass nakedβ now,β Sutter mocks, echoing Rhettβs earlier words. βBy the way I think the phrase is βbutt ass nakedβ,β He snorts.
βShut up,β Rhett huffs, pushing Sutterβs head under the water.
When Sutter makes his way to the surface, heβs coughing but still laughing, flipping his wet, dark hair out of his face.
βIf we get some sort of infection from this, Iβm gonna have a personal talk with your God about how he made you,β Rhett teases with a smile.
βOh good,β Sutter smiles, βWhile youβre at it, can you ask him to give me a less grumpy boyfriend?β
βI think youβll survive,β Rhettβs smile spreads wider now, just before leaning in and pressing their lips together.

Welcome to the confessionals. These will be little drabbles and glimpses into Rhett and Sutter's lives that won't make it into the overall story. I hope you enjoy! Once again, thanks to @sebsxphia for the header β€οΈ You might get a drabble like this if you ask me about them in my askbox π content warning for vomit and Rhett being a little bit of a freak lol (It's okay, Sutter matches his freak)
Rhett wakes up with the sun streaming through the window and a solid body right next to him. He frowns. If Sutter was still in bed when Rhett woke up and not up and at 'em, having done a million things already, then that could only meanβ
"Ah shit," Rhett grumbles, voice still thick with sleep as he leans over and presses his lips to his boyfriends forehead. He knew it would be burning, but he had to check anyway. "c'mon, Buck, gotta get up and get that fever down."
He lets Sutter get up slowly, heading into the bathroom to start running a tub full of cool water. Then, he comes back and slowly peels the clothes off his boyfriend, whose body has somehow transformed into a human-shaped bowl of jelly.
"I don't feel good," Sutter whimpers, and Rhett feels his heart break at the way the other man's voice cracks with how sore his throat must be.
"I know, darlin', gonna feel a whole lot better in'a cool bath, promise you." Rhett picks Sutter up, carrying him to the bathroom without even checking if he could walk for himself. He slowly lowers his boyfriend into the water, and only then does he turn off the tap.
No sooner did Sutter's naked body sink into the water, than did he start to gag over the side of the tub, water sloshing and chest heaving while Rhett muttered curses under his breath and fumbled for the trash can.
"I want my mom," Sutter whimpers, and Rhett can't help the slightly cruel chuckle that slips out.
"You're only sayin' that, 'cuz yer sick. Trust me, you do not want your mama here." It was the truth, and they both knew it. Even Rhett sometimes wished for his mom to come when he was under the weather, but it was never worth the hassle it brought.
After Rhett was sure that Sutter's fever was down, at least to a more manageable level, he picked out the most comfy clothes either of them owned and set up a little space on the couch. His one mistake was giving a popsicle over in an attempt to help soothe Sutter's raw throat; he couldn't pull his eyes away, watching the red, frozen treat disappear and then reappear out of the other man's mouth.
Sutter's sick, don't think about him sucking your dick, he's sick, don't think about him sucking your dick, he's sick don't think aboutβ ah, fuck it.
"I'm gonna go... take a shower," Rhett says finally, jerking his head toward the bathroom.
Sutter looks up from his dripping popsicle, eyebrows furrowing together. "You're gonna leave me?"
"Well, yeah, I mean you feel fine right now, right? So I just thought..."
But Sutter doesn't miss the way that Rhett's eyes keep flicking from his mouth to his popsicle or the fact that his jeans look just a little bit more filled out than they had previously. "Oh my gosh... you're getting turned on watching me eat this popsicle, aren't you? You're sick, Abbott, absolutely sick!" He laughs, eyes lighting up, teasing.
"What? No, I'm not!"
"You are!"
"I'm not!"
"You are!"
"Well, why are you eating a popsicle like that?!"
"I'm eating it normal!"
They're both laughing now, giggling really, the way that two grown, rough and tumble cowboys only let themselves giggle around each other and with each laugh, they seem to gravitate toward each other until Rhett's forehead is pressed against Sutter's, healthy against sick. Maybe sick against sick.
"Touch yourself here," Sutter says when the teasing and laughter had died down, his voice, still rough with sickness, was low and almost breathless.
"What?" Rhett frowns, like he hasn't heard correctly, but doesn't pull back.
"C'mon, touch yourself right here where I can see."
Welcome to the confessionals. These will be little drabbles and glimpses into Rhett and Sutter's lives that won't make it into the overall story. I hope you enjoy! Once again, thanks to @sebsxphia for the header β€οΈ You might get a drabble like this if you ask me about them in my askbox π This sorta goes along with Sutter's morning bible study, which you can read HERE, but you don't have to.
Sutter's morning routine has and always will be the same, whether he is at home or with Rhett. He wakes up at 5:30 in the morning so he can be awake before the sun. Sometimes, most of the time, Sutter wakes up before his alarm, turning it off before it can even sound so that there is no risk of waking Rhett.
He rolls out of the bed and then he puts the blankets back exactly where they were, making his side before Rhett is even out of it. He tiptoes to the kitchen, even though thereβs really no need for him to be that quiet once heβs out of the bedroom, and he sticks a plain coffee pod into the Keurig machine.
He canβt help but smile to himself every time he makes one, thinking about how much Rhett hated the thing. He thought it was too fancy, and the thought of only having one cup when you could have the entire pot was ridiculous to him. Still, he let Sutter bring the thing and they both knew that if Rhett is awake first, theyβll be having a whole pot and if Sutter is awake first, which was most days, they would each be having their own individual cup.
He doctors up his coffee with two heaping spoonfuls of brown sugar Splenda, and a splash of milk, leaving Rhett's black before he makes his way back to the bedroom. After pushing the half closed door open with his ass, Sutter sets Rhett's coffee on the bedside table and then heads to his reading chair in the corner where he opens the curtains, turns on his heating pad and grabs his bible and his journal.
Just as his morning routine, Sutter's bible study routine stays mostly the same as well. First, he writes down all his thoughts, anything that's worrying him or bothering him, something he may be struggling with. Then, he asks the holy spirit to guide him while he writes out a bible verse that corresponds with his thoughts. Instead of just reading that verse, he reads the whole chapter, looks at commentary and takes notes. He ends with a list of what he is thankful for and a closing prayer. Finally, if it's Sunday, he will attend mass and try to bribe Rhett to attend with him.
On a Monday, though, they have nowhere important to be, so he just closes his books and smiles at his boyfriend, still snoring softly across the room. "Wakey, wakey, cowboy," He murmurs, leaning over Rhett, pressing a kiss to his shoulder, then cheek. "Your coffee's gonna get cold if you sleep any longer." He presses another kiss to Rhett's cheek while the other man's eyes open.
"Wouldn't be a problem if you didn't wake up at the ass crack of dawn," Rhett grumbles.
Sutter can only laugh, "I ain't never met a cowboy who hated waking up early as much as you do." He's not put off by Rhett's attitude; he waits for the other man to sit up more and then crawls into his lap, straddling him while Rhett reaches for his coffee cup with a hum.
"What's the word today?" They both know Rhett doesn't really care, but it still makes Sutter a bit soft when he asks.
"Genesis"
"Ah," Rhett nods. "All the way back to the beginning, huh?" He brings the mug to his lips and sips.
"For today," Sutter gives a soft smile.
"Too bad, Adam and Eve were really onto something with that whole sin thing," Rhett grins.
Sutter rolls his eyes. "If you weren't holding that coffee, I'd slap you." It wouldn't be more than just a little tap on the cheek, of admonishment.
"Saved by the coffee!" Rhett grins, holding it up. "Though try and slap me a little later, I might just let you." He winks.
As (some) of you know, I am currently studying theology. So I thought it would be fun to do a few little side things for my fic, including daily devotionals where we get to spend some time with Sutter studying his bible and his thoughts and feelings about the scripture. Rhett's thoughts may even make it in there, too, if he's around π Thank you so much to @sebsxphia for the beautiful header π₯°
Today's reading: Genesis 28
Sutter's Highlighted Passage: Jacobβs vow unto God.
"Then Jacob made a vow, saying, βIf God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, so that I come back to my fatherβs house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God. And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be Godβs house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.β
Sutter's notes: The way Jacob prayed, it was evident Godβs mere word was not enough for him. He had to see God do it before he would believe. We should not be the same way, but we often are. Ask God to give you the strength to trust in him, even when you can't see immediate results or reasoning. Remember that he will not abandon you.
Things Sutter is grateful for today: Morning coffee, a beautiful sunrise, a pretty (though sleepy) boyfriend, his faith, and all of you.
Sutter's closing prayer: My gentle Lord, you speak to me day and night, calling me to the healing I need. Please help me to hear your voice and respond to you in faith. May my faith and confidence in you grow strong and become the source of your glorious action in my life. Jesus, I do trust in you, and I pray that you look after Matthew, who is with you in heaven, Luke, Jordan, Brooks, Nash, Franklin and Rhett. In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Amen.
What's your favorite thing about Sutter? Does Rhett's clothing style change the longer he's with Sutter? (Idk Sutter's style). Do they share clothes?
My favourite thing about Sutter is his strength and his openness to understand. He is constantly working to be the best version of himself and despite the things he gave up on when he was a kid, he's trying not to do that now, if he wants to do something, he will find a way to do it, and if he can't, he will work to understand why that is and his feelings about it. He regrets a lot of his actions and choices when he was younger, and instead of stewing in that regret, he's working to understand how he can do better going forward. (I think this will be very good for Rhett as well)
Rhett's style does not change, no. Mostly because Sutter is much smaller than Rhett, and Rhett can't fit into any of his clothes π Sutter may be known to steal a flannel or two from Rhett now and again for early morning coffee after a night together, though π

Could you please do a moodboard of Sutter and Rhett having a picnic?! Like some private place where they couldnβt be found out about?
You betcha, Bubba! One private picnic for our two favourite cowboys comin' right up. ;) Thanks for requesting!!
Sutter waiting by his truck to pick Rhett up, Rhett's favourite sign from a campground they pass on their way to their private spot, Cecilia's homemade biscuits and jam (Rhett didn't tell her he was taking them), the most private picnic spot where they're never bothered (private enough to go skinny dipping π) and our two boys who get to be unapologetically themselves. β€οΈ
For the GMG series I love so much! Where did you get the ideas or inspiration for creating Sutter?
Okay, so I've been thinking about this for a really long time because Sutter means so much to me, and I really wanted to word this the best way I could. Honestly, I wanted to create someone who was the complete opposite of how I see Rhett. I wanted someone who was very secure in who they are and in their faith. I wanted to see how that could influence Rhett.
I feel like the actual show didn't give us much in terms of character growth or consistency, and maybe it's just because it was cut off so early, but I felt like the direction they were going was going to ruin the character.
I also wanted to create someone who was a better match for Rhett because Maria was not it for me, and again, I think that queerness and faith are just such interesting and deep topics to explore, I wanted to create a couple that could influence and challenge each other to be better people and to stand up for who they are and what they want.
Sutter came to me because I wanted to create a trans character that wasn't just a bunch of stereotypes meshed together, and I wanted to subvert the notion that all queer people abandon their faith when they find out who they are. Jesus loves freaks and prostitutes and queer people. He loves everyone, and he doesn't judge. Anyone who tells you different is preaching organized religion and not faith. I wanted a chance to write "opposites attracted" but in a slightly unconventional way and thus... Sutter was born. lol
