The Jolly Boatman Suzanne Einzig Autolithograph from her 1945 book, Mary Belinda and The Ten Aunts, her first book. She later rocketed to fame with The Secret Garden, but for this she worked on five separations on zinc plates, so cold in the winter if 1944 that she had to draw in gloves with the tips of the fingers cut off to hold the litho crayons. When her breath condensed on the cold plates it made the crayons skid! The Pursuit of Knowledge Susan Einzig one of her illustrations from Tom’s Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce. Einzig, first Suzanne, then Susan, was one of the last arrivals via the Kindertransport trains arriving here in 1939. During the war, between working in factories, she autolithographed two children’s books for Transatlantic Arts and post war taught at Camberwell. She was a great friend of John Minton and their illustrations reflect their closeness in style.
