The War on Sleep
-
Thereās a military arms race to build soldiers who fight without fatigue.
-
All over the world, scientists are experimenting on soldiers to keep them awake beyond the limits of normal endurance. Researchers are engineering, and militaries are deploying, chemically enhanced troops. Of all the superpowers weāve imagined, the one that has turned out to be most attainableāso attainable weāre already using itāis the ability to go without sleep.
..
Why has functioning without sleep, unlike other fantasized human enhancements, become real? Because the immediate goal is modestly defined, demonstrably achievable, and easy to measure in experiments. We donāt have to keep you awake forever. We just have to compensate, partially and temporarily, for the cognitive impairment caused by your lack of sleep. In a way, we arenāt enhancing your performance. Weāre just raising it back to your normal levelāthe level at which you function when youāre wide awake. The published experimental reports propose to āsustain,ā āmaintain,ā or ārestoreā what they call ābaseline,ā or āpre-deprivationā performance. They aim to āattenuate,ā āalleviate,ā or āreverseā the ādeficits,ā ādecrements,ā and ādegradationsā caused by sleep deprivation. They speak of modafinil as a ācountermeasureā to the ānegative effectsā of long shifts.
..
Thatās where the logic of enhancement begins. What used to be normalāneeding eight hours of sleep each nightāis now understood as a fatal flaw. An Israeli report, āPsychostimulants and Military Operations,ā examines this āhuman-machine conflict,ā lamenting, āAlthough an aircraft can mechanically function effectively throughout long hours, pilots cannot.ā Canadian defense scientists also highlight this ādiscrepancy between human need and technological capability.ā A U.S. Air Force document warns of disastrous āsleep attacksāāexhausted personnel nodding off on the job. We are the defect. We must be cured. (via Sleep deprivation in the military: Modafinil and the arms race for soldiers without fatigue. - Slate Magazine)
Funerals
I was marveling today at the fact that I didn't know you were supposed to pull over for a funeral procession until the day of my grandma's funeral.Ā Then, on the way home, I had to pull over for a funeral procession. Creepy.
