March 18th; Superpoint, Toronto, ON
Adam and I decided to head to Superpoint a few weeks ago almost a month ago after being told many times that I just HAD to try the pizza. I've actually wanted to visit Superpoint since it opened but we hadn't found the opportunity yet. I wasn't able to make a reservation but they told me they left tables open for walk-ins and while we weren't able to grab one on March 18th, there was a nice spot at the bar for us. Sitting at the bar in restaurants was never my thing until pretty recently, but now I love to: it creates an intimate experience for you and your partner, drinks are readily available and I usually feel like I can linger a little longer.
The first thing I noticed when we entered Superpoint was that it’s very dark inside (which I'm sure is the first thing you'll notice about the pictures we took as well -- sorry, wasn't possible to grab good shots) and the music was incredibly loud. I’m never against some banging tunes on a Saturday night, but it was so loud that it was hard for the bartender to hear us. I expect deafening music at a bar or club but at a restaurant, it's a little jarring and makes the ordering experience hard.
We started with warm olives (delicious), the tomato salad (really great -- juicy tomatoes and full of flavour) and the tomato bruschetta. Their twist on bruschetta is definitely something I've never tried before: thick-cut dark bread with a cold tomato sauce slathered high on top, I found the dish really interesting. The tomato sauce was sweet and so full of flavour that I was really looking forward to trying it on the pizza (as I assumed it was the same sauce they would use on their pizza). Adam wasn't a huge fan of the bruschetta, but I'm a big tomato sauce lover, and I found this variation really fresh and tasty.
As for pizza, Superpoint has their different options listed on a menu board. I'm not sure if this changes daily, but there were only a few options available to us. We opted for the cheese pizza, as I didn't see margherita available, though I wonder if you can request margherita as the couple next to us definitely had a delicious looking margherita pie, and made me wish I had asked in case it was available. When our pizza finally arrived, I was so excited to dive in. The pies are huge, cooked with a very thin crust. I loved the texture of the cheese -- melted just right and not too much, they had spiced it with oregano, which was a nice touch. My disappointment was with the tomato sauce. I expected the same delicious, highly-flavoured spread that I experienced with the bruschetta, but whether it's a different sauce they use for the pizza or the flavours just don't translate once cooked on the pizza, I tasted almost nothing. I really love a sweet, full sauce and this fell flat for me. Don't get me wrong - this pizza is good - but where I expected to be blown away, I was left wanting more.
Overall, we had a fantastic date night at Superpoint, and I think we need to give it another shot. Looking at the bubbling crust, piles of mozzarella and candles burning in the above photograph, I’m fancying a trip quite soon!
