Today we are announcing yet another big update for our Superforecasts. This time we are introducing two completely new Superforecast regions in South Africa and the Canary Islands.

The Superforecast for South Africa is powered by the latest versions of regional weather forecast models. The horizontal resolution is 5km, which makes this forecast the highest resolution forecast for South Africa available! The area covers both the region around Cape Town as well as the easterly parts of the country up to Durban. This Superforecast is available for the next three days in hourly timesteps. 

The Superforecast for the Canary Islands is powered by the same regional weather forecast model. The horizontal resolution is 4km - this is also one of the highest resolutions available for this area. The area covers the all Canary Islands like Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria etc. This Superforecast is also available for the next three days in hourly timesteps. 

Today we released another big update for our Superforecast. This time we improved the resolution of the Superforecast for North America from 12km down to 5km. This results in much improved forecasts, especially in complex terrain or in thermal spots.

Yesterday we updated our high-resolution weather forecast model Superforecast for Europe. Now the wind and weather forecast for the next three days is computed in 12km horizontal resolution which is almost twice the resolution we used before. Together with improved physics options, this should give a more precise forecast especially for locations with difficult local conditions. Another important update is that you can now also see the predicted maximum wind gusts.

The new physics options and wind gusts options are also available for our Superforecast for Egypt. The already very high resolution of 7km remains unchanged.

Today we are proud to release version 1.1 of our Windfinder iPhone App! With our app, you are able to browse the Windfinder forecasts for over 15000 locations worldwide and the current wind and weather reports for over 3000 locations worldwide on your iPhone. Our app has already received very good feedback, it was featured by Apple in "New and noteworthy" and became #1 weather app in 36 countries worldwide. The Windfinder iPhone App is available in two versions, one free and ad-supported version and a paid version without advertising which costs 1.59 Euro / 1.99 USD.

This version features a major update for the Windfinder Pro app: we have added the Superforecast, our high-resolution weather prediction model for all locations in Europe, North America and Egypt! There were also updates for the search menu for both the free and the Pro version - for example you are now able to search for nearby Windfinder locations near your current position. If your favorite location is missing, you can also suggest a new location right inside the iPhone app.

2009 was a year where we added many new features and additions to windfinder.com. In this year, we have added translations for Windfinder in 15 languages besides English and German: French, Spanish Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Dutch, Japanese, Chinese, Turkish, Indonesian, Greek, Korean, Danish, Tagalog and Finnish. During this year, we have made significant improvements to our Superforecast weather prediction model. We have added a high-resolution Superforecast for Egypt and also improved the accuracy of our Superforecasts for Europe. In addition to that, we have added Superforecast maps for North America.

We also updated our widgets and gadgets for many platforms, including a big new release of Windfox, our popular Firefox extension which has been downloaded more than 60000 times until now. The biggest release was the launch of the Windfinder iPhone app which was a huge success worldwide: the app became #1 weather app in 36 countries worldwide, including Germany, UK and Russia and was featured in "New and noteworthy" in the iTunes App Store.

Of course we also published a lot of event reports for different kite- and windsurfing tours, including the PKRA kitesurfing world tour, the PWA windsurfing world tour, the German windsurf cup and the German Kitesurf-Trophy. Today we can present you a new feature on the Windfinder website. In addition to our existing Superforecast maps for Europe and Egypt, we can now offer you Superforecast maps for North America, too.

The Superforecast for North America is our high-resolution weather model covering the whole North American continent with a horizontal resolution of 12km. We have created 21 selected maps especially targeted at kitesurfers, windsurfers, surfers, sailors and paragliders. Now everyone can check the wind conditions in the area around his or her favorite place to get a better picture of the general weather situation. Available maps include:

Columbia River Gorge including the whole Hood River area

Southern Florida, covering Islamorada and the Miami area and many more

North and South Carolina, with detailed forecasts also in the Cape Hatteras area

Yucatan peninsula (Cozumel, Isla Holbox, Playa del Carmen)

the area around San Francisco Bay

the Great Lakes (Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Ontario)

Nova Scotia, including Prince Edward Island and Magdalen Island
