It's like... taking an elaborate, ceremonial, ancestral garment with hundreds upon hundreds of yards of fabric that was woven across centuries, taking a magnifying glass to one corner, and saying, "See? The pattern on this hem can be found on this other garment, so you'll want to throw that entire ancestral garment away for this new one, right?"

Is the view on one drop thing bad only in an Amercian context? as in New Zealand, if you whakapapa Māori (have Māori lineage), you are Māori, no matter how genetically Māori you are. And this is a sentiment held by Māori.

I'm not trying to dismiss the badness of the one drop rule in Amercia as it obviously it was bad. It's just that I'm moreso asking about the global context due to the post in was originally asking about, you were implying it was bad to hold this idea for countries outside of theUS as well, and because I don't come from the US, my perspective regarding indigenousness comes from New Zealand and how Māori view indigenousness as they are our indigenousness population.

I am terrible when it comes to tone over text so I just want to be clear, I'm not implying you're anti indigenous, I am just wanting clarification on your opinion as I read it a certain way coming from perspectives from my country, and want to give you the benefit of the doubt by asking for clarification instead of assuming anything negative.

This doesn't have anything to do with the way that indigenous people categorize themselves, but rather it has to do with the laws imposed on indigenous populations that have been used to harm them in a variety of ways. One of those ways is shit like the one drop rule, or the Nazi laws in Germany during the Shoah. By using genetics-based laws to categorize people and oppress them, especially when those people do not classify themselves in the same way. For example, if you had one Jewish grandparent, you were considered Jewish. This goes against how Jewish people categorize ourselves, which is based on the matrilineal line or via conversion. These genetics-based laws have been used to harm Jews throughout history, and so it is extremely antisemitic and racist to claim that Jewishness comes down to DNA. That this is used as a supercessionist argument by colonial entities in order to oppress, invade and steal our lands, and then say "well our ancient DNA actually means we're the same as you and we're the real indigenous population" is extra shitty.

The fact of the matter is, that Arabs can trace their ancient genetic lineage to trace amounts of Canaanite DNA does not give them a claim to Israel, because Arabs as a culture and ethnicity rejected Israel and Judaism when they voluntarily emigrated and underwent a totally separate ethnogenesis in Paran. By the way, this ethnogenesis itself was fundamentally based on antisemitic canard. You cannot divorce antisemitism from ancient Islam, period. The fact is, Muhammed went into Medina and slaughtered and beheaded over 600 Jews and enslaved the rest. This is historical fact. Throughout history in many areas of the Middle East Islamic conquest has oppressed the native, indigenous populations of many different countries, including Israel and Jews. They do not get to come back and say "actually we're the real indigenous population," and that Jews are "colonialist" for returning our street names to ancient Hebrew which was their original names. The colonialist shit was their names being forcibly changed into Arabic. To then justify that by literal Blood & Soil, One Drop Rule rhetoric is disgusting.

The fact that Maori or other indigenous populations may categorize themselves based on DNA is totally irrelevant. I'm not implying that categorizing one's self based on DNA is globally terrible, I am implying that it is extremely antisemitic to do this to Jews, especially if you are a North American descendent of colonizers who have used laws like this to oppress indigenous and Black people in North America.

It's cultural appropriation. It's taking our sacred texts and saying "we know your history, your faith, and your G-d better than you do." It's twisting the deeply Jewish meanings of the Tanakh into somehow being about things that wouldn't happen for hundreds or thousands of years. It's taking the history of our people and egotistically making it all about you, somehow. It's trying to split the spiritual atom. It's trying to sever the self from the soul.

It's assuming you know anything about us because your holy texts talk about us, and because you read our stolen texts through a lens that flatters you. You take our practices and denigrate them, and you take our holy sites and bar us from them with violence. And when we protest this, or even simply try to practice our religion and culture in peace, you try to silence us and stop us. Why? Because you can't stand the sight of the people you hurt and stole from. And the longer the violence continues, the more our ongoing survival becomes loathsome to you. You can't face your people's history and you can't face what you took from us, so you would rather we were dead. But our living ghosts haunt your steps and your prayers. You see us everywhere in the things you took from us and your desperate efforts to write us out of our own story and it drives you insane.
