Half Happy - Slow Down

Welsh indie newcomers Half Happy release profound new offering ‘Slow Down’, which is out now.

Shooting up through Cardiff’s flourishing music scene, the thrilling quartet bounce around the walls of dream-pop, indie-rock and post punk but don't stay in one place for too long. Winners of the Welsh Music Prize 2023 (Triskell Award), the group mould their influences with fresh force, creating engaging and melody-stuffed storytelling, with honest observations melting into day-dream lyricism.

Having already earned substantial praise from Huw Stephens on the BBC 6 Music airwaves, Half Happy are primed to release a slew of new material in the coming months. Whilst on the live front, the band’s 10+ years of best-friendship is clearly evident in their stellar performances, with a slew of key support slots ticked off in recent times with the likes of English Teacher, Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard and Pale Blue Eyes. 

Detailing their new release, frontwoman Rosalie Miller revealed: “You often see people you love let stress take over to a point where it consumes. It’s hard to tell them to stop or tell yourself to stop. ‘Slow Down’ is a message really. Stop what you’re doing, look around and try and find some joy, shut out external noise, go have a boogie in your room or something.”

Milly - ‘Illuminate’ (Dangerbird Records)

Los Angeles trio Milly share brand new offering ‘Illuminate’, set for release March 30th via cult indie label Dangerbird Records (Grandaddy, Swervedriver).

Taken from a productive East LA recording session in the summer of 2021 with producer Corey Coffman (Gleemer), ‘Illuminate’ manages to enlarge the group’s huge choruses and massive guitars, yielding one of their most satisfying songs to date.

Milly’s expansion from what started as a solo vehicle for the songs of Brendan Dyer, to a core three-piece lineup including Spencer Light and Yarden Erez, is more evident than ever in its full-colour, widescreen panorama. Beginning with a guitar-hero-ready riff, Brendan lullabies the listener through the song’s verse, bouncing on the interplay of his and Spencer’s guitars before delivering a singalong chorus, built for the catharsis inevitable as Milly returns to the live circuit this week.

Marking their first new material since 2021’s ‘Wish Goes On’ EP, which drew immense acclaim across the press landscape (NME, NPR, Clash, Paste, Gigwise, Beats Per Minute), ‘Illuminate’ reflects Milly’s immense sense of promise, with the band’s debut album set for release later this year.

Detailing their new effort, frontman Dyer explained: “It’s about the comfort found in self expression and reminding yourself who you are by acts such as putting your favourite posters up on your wall or rearranging your room. It was written in a time when free-time felt unlimited (2020) and I was staying up late self-reflecting. I was listening to Title Fight’s ‘Floral Green’ nonstop at this point, while also reconnecting with some records of my youth such as Hawthorne Heights’ ‘Silence in Black and White’."
