Mudroom Foyer Ideas for remodeling a medium-sized southwestern entryway with a brown floor, brown walls, and a medium-sized wood front door.
Techstyle Haus was one of the innovative entries in the recently concluded Solar Decathlon Europe 2014. The small house was created by a team of students from the Rhode Island School of Design, Brown University and the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt. Wanting to try something different, the team decided to build a Passive House using a textile roof.
The tent-like appearance might give the impression that the roof is thin, but it actually consists of several layers including nearly 12 inches of mineral wool insulation. Topping the roof are a high-efficiency photovoltaic system and solar water heater, which together collect more energy than the house uses.
The roof is stretched over five curved steel ribs that span the house without any intermediate supporting posts or walls. That left the 76.7Â m2 (825Â ft2) interior wide open, providing flexibility in how the space is used. The team opted for an open one-bedroom plus loft floor plan, concentrating the mechanical components into a technical core containing the kitchen, bathroom and laundry.

Entellis is hosting a Passive House Builder Training Event!
Superinsulation, air-tight envelopes, high-performance window installation, site management, component sourcing--- Â passive house construction presents special challenges to builders. The PHIUS Builders Training program prepares construction professionals to meet the passive house challenge.Â
Dan Whitmore, Mike Kernagis and Adam Cohen--who have built 20 successful passive house projects between them--have developed the curriculum. It runs from an introduction to design theory and climate-specific detailing to materials, techniques, project management and quality assurance. Â
The course offers real-world experience in the on-site implementation of passive house as well as counseling and advice to both the practical and business concerns specific to passive house. The course covers not only craftsmanship, but also focuses on the risks and liability to the passive house contractor and guidance in both problem solving and (more importantly) problem avoidance.
The full program runs over four days- Tuesday, May 13 through Friday, May 16
 Course Highlights
•Learn general passive house principles
•Classroom and field focus on envelope issues
•HVAC considerations and testing
•Cost optimization/bidding
•QA/QC process
