The temperatures here in Atlas were so vast from what Yang was used to growing up in Patch. Was it because they were higher up? The air was naturally colder the higher in altitude you got, right? It was winter, they were higher in the sky, it made sense. Still, Yang much rather preferred the summertime to these frigid temperatures– she never liked winter time much.
She’d left the Academy to walk outside into it’s courtyard. A lot had been happening lately, everyone was on edge, despite how much they tried to hide their true feelings and Yang was no different. She needed air, she needed peace and quiet. She’d been standing outside ;leaning against the side of the school for some time, surely long enough for someone to notice her presence was missing from Ironwood’s rigorous training regiment by now.
When she heard footsteps coming near, Yang looked over her shoulder and smiled, finding her Uncle Qrow smirking back at her, two cups of hot chocolate in his hands, one of which she happily took, thankful for the warmth the hot drink provided to her cold hand. “Thanks Qrow, what’s up?”
James was pushing these kids hard, but there was no denying that he had good cause. They were good, and they’d all grown since the fall of Beacon, but they still weren’t ready for the war to come. There was always more work to do, it seemed. Still... Their schedule was grueling. Between missions and training sessions and protecting the Amity Tower, they hardly had time to breathe. Maybe that was for the best. With downtime came more moments to think, to dwell on what came next. Or to stew on the tension already thick in the air. Sometimes thinking on everything was unavoidable.
Perhaps they shouldn’t try to avoid it.
Qrow watched her slip into the courtyard, but when she didn’t return he stood to follow her. Was something wrong? No commotion or smoke, and he doubted Yang would go without a fight. Nobody had raised the alarm either. More than likely she was either ditching or standing around and freezing her butt off-- maybe both. Passing the coffee cart, he paused to fill up two cups of hot chocolate. Call it uncle’s intuition, but he thought she might want something to warm her up.
“You've been out here a long time, Firecracker, and it’s awfully cold for standing around.” Handing her the cup with a smirk, Qrow took a sip from his own hot chocolate. Already the cold was seeping into his fingers, the metal rings adorning them no help against the bitter chill. At least the heaters kept the air from stinging his lungs. “You doin’ ok?”
