It took Gilbert nearly a year to win over Philip Schuyler, to let him marry his third daughter. Throughout that year, though, Gil and Peggy got progressively more brave, with Gil more often than not sneaking through the streets of New York in the middle of the night just to show his face at Margarita’s window to confess his love to her. Along with that, he often brought along gifts ranging from flowers to perfume to jewelry. Their wedding day rivaled Alexander and Eliza’s when it came to the feeling of joy that spread through the room. There was not a face without a smile, not a glass without fine French wine. And, while their guests were happy, Gilbert and Margarita were the happiest, spending not even a moment apart, Gil’s arm always around Peggy’s waist or her hand draped over his arm. They laughed, they smiled, and, at the end of the night, they retired together for the first time, and they realized that it was certainly worth a year of waiting.
