Blue Moonstone, Pink Sunstone
I love the idea of the gems’ skin/bodies being actually made of the stones their gems are made of, so Dipper has this magnificent iridescent radiance to his ‘skin’ and you can see through him if he turns against the light right. This is most noticeable on his cheekbones and nose, and his fingers, which tend to have a centimeter or so of translucence before the color, and the degree of blue in his skin varies depending on the light.
Likewise, Mabel, a pink sunstone, has light peachy-pink skin with internal shades and facets beneath the surface, along with little flecks of metallic gold and copper and rosy pink. I could have made her orange and iridescent just like a moonstone–a highly polished golden sunstone–but the rough, low-polished pink sunstone fit her far better.
In my Gem Falls AU, diamonds personally sow kindergartens, and the diamond who sowed the kindergarten influences where on the color wheel the gems will be. Yellow Diamond is responsible for reds, oranges, yellows, and bright yellow-greens, and Blue Diamond is responsible for blues, purples, blacks and dark greens. Pink Diamond makes pinks, the purplish reds, some pinkish purples, and white gems. Multicolored gems like bismuth are planned specifically and are generally warrior or worker gems made to fit in a specific niche. Moonstones are decorative foot soldiers made to be mass-produced and discarded quickly, the pawns of a chess set. Sunstones are decorative support soldiers, designed to perform the roles of a squire to a knight. Bill and Kryptos–Yellow and Blue diamond–laid out a kindergarten together, with Kryptos overseeing the sowing of the smaller half, and Bill overseeing the sowing of the larger part. However, right where the two halves met, there was one hole. And in an unheard of turn of events, two separate gems emerged from one hole–a sunstone, and a moonstone. Furthermore, the moonstone’s gem was located on his forehead, same as Bill, while the sunstone had her gem on her chest, same as Kryptos–opposite of their respective diamonds.
Because she was a pink sunstone in a kindergarten that should have been solely shades of yellow and shades of blue, Bill told Kryptos to take the sunstone and took the Moonstone into his personal court as a novelty servant, despite protest from Kryptos. However, Bill had a history of smashing gems for fun, and especially as punishment, and when the sunstone disobeyed Kryptos she was brought before him for ‘trial’. He ordered them to smash her on sight, but the moonstone intervened, begging the diamond to spare her. Bill agreed, but he was intrigued by the Moonstone's loyalty and decided to make him part of his personal entourage, ordering Dipper to ‘either learn to fight for me or learn to die for me.’
Dipper and Mabel are still close years and years later, both of them helping the Crystal Gems raise Steven.
