LAKE WALES | Edward W. Bok Academy is expected to get a before-Halloween treat when the floating classroom arrives Friday. It will be the biggest part of the school's STEM Week, which is filled with events designed to showcase the middle school's science, technology, engineering and math lab and show how various school technologies are helping enhance those subjects. From 9 a.m. until 3:50 p.m. Thursday, the public and teachers get a firsthand look at how the academic subjects are used in all Bok Academy classes. The floating classroom — an 18-by-40-foot pontoon boat with an on-board laboratory — has been in the works since this past summer. Two Fridays ago, it was still waiting for parts, for powder-coating to be done on some pieces and for workers to install the rails, posts and roof, said Damien Moses, Bok Academy principal. He expected the work to take at least another 10 working days from that point. When completed, the boat should be capable of taking more than 20 students along with three teachers onto Crooked Lake, a.k.a. Lake Caloosa, Moses said. Out of the possible names submitted by students, Moses has selected four finalists. But he will not say which name he has chosen until the boat is christened and launched just off the school's rear property line into the 4,274-acre lake. Promethean, a British educational-technology company, sent its ActivBus to the school Aug. 14. The vehicle contains an interactive classroom and showroom to demonstrate new lines of smart boards and devices based on the company's ActivBoard Pro electronic screens. Those screens have replaced and expanded the roles of chalkboards and dry-erase white boards in classrooms. "We're 100 percent Promethean at Bok," said Principal Damien Moses, referring to the school's electronic screen classrooms. "When we get to see where it's headed, we're excited." Teachers at Bok Academy have the 300 series Promethean boards, Moses said, which require them to use a stylus pen to write on the screen and to both move and manipulate objects and images. Shannon Lohse Kula, the company's manager of educational solutions in Florida, demonstrated a new screen that lets teachers use fingertips to write or to move, resize or rotate one or more objects at a time. Student input devices have upgraded to what one teacher in the room dubbed a "BlackBerry on steroids," with a full alphabetic and numeric keypad. It enhances one of the aspects of the technology, Kula said: instant feedback. Teachers don't have to wait a week or more for the quiz before they know if students understood and absorbed the lesson, she said.
