Darrell Hawkins ‘FANBOY’ exhibition coming soon!Â
For his latest exhibition ‘FANBOY’ Darrell Hawkins has continued to elaborate his motifs, teasing out the femme fatales and dapper gents from the web of history and presenting them with his signature fluorescent verve. His work records the cyclical nature of contemporary cultural life, combining the past, present and future in one moment.
‘Colour in my artwork democratises the imagery I use in my paintings. I employ clashing vibrant hues and punchy neons in my work to drive my visual ideas, explore my own sense of aesthetics and to fulfil an innate need for sensory exploration.’ - Darrell Hawkins.
The show’s title refers to the method with which Hawkins creates his work, collecting imagery online to create a personal archive of imagery, that he then cuts and pastes together to create digital collages which form the source imagery for his paintings - some of these digital collages will be on show in this exhibition for the very first time.
‘The dynamic of the relationship I have with the people and things that inhabit my work is similar to a Fan Boy’s mentality, a visual list of things I connect with and idolise. I alternate between historical and contemporary references, connections I have made between subjects that interest me or outcomes of narratives I have created.’

Celebrating #NationalSocialMediaDay 2016 on a high!
Today is Social Media Day and yet another Medway student has qualified in Social Media for Business.
Frankie Noller, aged 20 and living in Rochester officially passed her Level 3 Apprenticeship in Social Media for Business this week, just in time to celebrate Mashed Social Media Day today. After graduating with a distinction from the University of Creative Arts 2 years ago, she began working at award winning venue Sun Pier House as their Social Media and Digital Marketing apprentice. She has taken lead on organising and promoting their space and art exhibitions as well as getting involved with the curation of shows. Frankie has also recently been managing social media accounts for Medway Print Festival 2016 whilst networking and continuing to build on her creative contacts in Medway.
Mashable launched Social Media Day in 2010 as a way to recognize and celebrate social media's impact on global communication. While every day is essentially Social Media Day, June 30th, 2016 marked the seventh-annual official global celebration. Last year, meet-ups happened all over the world including those in Egypt, Spain, and San Diego in the USA… so it’s not just Medway, we’re looking at the bigger picture here.
“When I first left college I was torn between going to university or finding a full time job to work, I had never really considered an apprenticeship, however, I was intrigued by the art scene in Medway and the position at Sun Pier House just seemed perfect. I have been working in an industry of creativity and Art which I love and am able to use social media and marketing to promote and advertise all of the exciting events and businesses we are involved with. After working here for a year and a half and completing my NQV I will now continue with SPH and additionally work freelance in Social Media for creative businesses – all at the grand old age of 20. Social Media has changed communication between businesses, organizations, communities, and individuals - it is an ever growing industry and the benefits of participating in social media have gone beyond simply social sharing to building reputation and bringing in career opportunities. I would encourage school and college leavers to look at Apprenticeships as a means of continuing their study in the work place. Find something you like and pursue it! “- Frankie Noller.
(Press release - to be published in the Kent / Medway Messenger on Friday 1st July 2016.)

My role at Sun Pier House...Â
(Digital Marketing Apprentice)
I have been working at Sun Pier House in Chatham now for over a year and must I say it has been such a brilliant experience and I certainly am not ready to end it. At the beginning of my placement here I had little to no experience in dealing with professional enquirers and ensuring that marketing accounts where spic and span at all times. In my time here I have really grown in confidence and feel like I have evolved into a little social butterfly. I just love it here!
I now set my own challenges and manage my own tasks as well as balancing this with completing my NVQ in Social Media Marketing For Business. When I was half way through my placement, my learning provider’s company went bust which meant that all of my coursework had been lost which lead to me having to re-start the course as a whole. This was a pain at the time but now I am working with my new assessor/tutor Andrea, I am whizzing through it like there’s no tomorrow. So, a positive outcome for something so annoying.
I have really bonded with the whole team here from the top dogs, Heather and Ed, to the tearoom staff and my good friend Ruby who works in the kitchen cooking away every week delivering those delicate afternoon tea’s to our special guests. Now that I have such a good relationship with everyone here I feel that we can all work together to ensure that all runs smoothly and we achieve our set goals. It has also been brilliant to work with our intern Anique who is from Holland, this is her first time in England by herself and i must say, the British defiantly do not work as fast as the Dutch... we can’t think of any more jobs to give her!!Â
At first I thought that when my apprenticeship placement came to an end I would have to leave the beloved Sun Pier House... but I am happy to say that they can’t get rid of me just yet and i’ll be taking on the more professional marketing roles and my own projects. I aim to do this over a few hours per week whilst assisting the new apprentice to achieve the same goals that I have achieved this year. Hopefully this will be another valuable member added to the team to keep us going strong as ever!
