Regarding baby Britain, I have so many thoughts I love him so much, please have these headcanons:
- He feels guilty that their mother died. He was there when it happened, but wasn't strong enough to do anything about it.
- I know we all think about Denmark and England as the viking invasion of the British Isles, but Denmark was in and around England much before then;
An anglosaxon myth about a Danish man they named "Hengist", (Oldenglish or anglosaxon word for "Stallion") depicts him being the first to lead germanic invason to the british isles sometime in the 400s in the Kingdom of Kent - And the Anglosaxons being a main majority of germanic immigrants who were the ones to push out Roman-occupation (Alongside The Irish and The Scottish, except it looks like Ireland and Scotland took advantage of the turmoil down in England to make their move and try to advance on Britain of their own accord).
It makes me think that Arthur and Mathias' relationship works almost exactly like the relationship Arthur has with his brothers - Because Denmark was up in England's business from the second he learned how to navigate the sea and Cnut the Great wasn't, according to what I learned about in school, not all that cruel, when compared to England's own monarchs.
- He keeps his mother's longbow and uses it to death. I can see him keeping the engraved pieces when it snaps as well.
- He's handy! Like, he can craft thing very easily! Makes arrows and bows, he can definite sow and essentially if you left him tf alone he'd thrive by himself in the forest
(Sorry if the whole Denmark rant was too long, but seriously, Denmark and England has some HISTORY and it's JUICY)
See I don't even know how to feel about Arthur's mother because I just. who is she? it's the same problem that mama Greece and Germania have where all these various cultures are simplified and grouped together even though that doesn’t make sense, really? and Arthur is the worst by fucking far because like..... is he the Anglo-Saxons who migrated from northern Germany and eradicated the native language/culture? is he the native language/culture and just adopted the Anglo-Saxons? what about the Danelaw? and like you said, the Danes were migrating to the British Isles long before the Viking Age, too, so they're still very closely tied. and then there's the fucking French Normans, bringing their Romance Latin culture back once again into England. point being I have no idea who Britannia would actually be or what her relationship to Arthur is and I have to either assume the nations don't have biological relatives and it's all figurative language or else I'll just make it way overcomplicated.
so you know what. yes. if the nations’ families are all figurative anyway, then Arthur and Mathias (is... that his name?) are absolutely brothers as much as Arthur and the others are.
I’ll also definitely adopt the handcrafting and sewing hc; Arthur is probably even more self-sufficient than most nations already are by virtue of uh, possibly not actually having a nation at some point in his early life. forest gremlin.
