DigiMonday - SUNMON
(Baby 2 Level/No Attribute/Lesser Type)
Sunmon technically made its debut in two different games at the same time; alongside the similar-looking Moonmon it first appeared in 2007 in the simultaneously-released Digimon World Dawn and Digimon World Dusk (known in Japan as Digimon Story: Sunburst and Digimon Story: Moonlight.) In their debut outing these two little blobs got to be a pretty big deal; Sunmon was introduced as the "official" pre-evolution of Dawn's mascot Coronamon, while Moonmon filled the same role for Dusk's Lunamon. Through Coronamon the player could eventually raise a Sunmon into a line of new sun-themed Digis until it ultimately became an Apollomon (named for Apollo, the Greek god of the sun,) rounding out the overall sunny aesthetics of Coronamon's evolution line and of Dawn as a whole.
(Design notes on Sunmon, Coronamon and their various firey-themed evolutions, image source here.)
The Digimon Encyclopedia entry for Sunmon states those little nubs that give it its sun-like shape are actually tentacle-like limbs, which is a fun way of combining sun iconography with the "blob-with-a-face" design typical of baby Digimon. The blast of fire coming out of its head may also be a reference to the phenomenon of solar flares, in which the expulsion of particles and energy from the sun's corona (its gas-based outermost layer) creates superhot "clouds" that appear brighter than the surrounding plasma. On the whole, its a very fun approach to a sun-themed creature design!
(Sunmon's battle sprite in World Dawn, available in GIF form here. The pixel art in the DS Digimon World/Story games is very cute...)
Merlot is a friend of Violet's with her two Digimon partners, Sunmon and Moonmon! Merlot has a lot on her plate at school, after school, and at home. When those responsibilities get too much, she runs off to the digital world, acting as a knight to those in need!

This is technically tied into something but whatever. I was trying to sort of replicate the original Digimon illustration style with the rendering here.
Got in the mood to do a bit more digimon art! Glad that Dawn and Dusk exclusive digimon are getting more attention now in newer games :)
