Love the soft succulent Freo octopus, crunchy pickled onion and that delicious lemongrass sambal. The charred bits gave a smoky flavour but personally, I don’t like charred bits so I scraped that away. P.S How good are our local produce? Wagyu rendang pie, pickled radish, fermented sambal; aud9 from Sunda Dining, Melbourne. From my bar seat, I could see that this dish is another popular entrée and it smelt so fragrant when it is just out from the fryer. It was not on my initial order but I knew I had to try it based on the intoxicating (smelt just like deep-fried mantou buns) fragrance. It is stuffed to the brim with wagyu rendang and I especially love the pickled radish to balance out the greasiness. OFF MENU: Roti with Vegemite curry; aud16 from Sunda Dining, Melbourne. Video sound enabled to let you hear how crisp the roti is. It is insanely crispy and delicious - but also really oily in the middle as the recipe involves using buttermilk to cook it - the oiliness is a bit of a bugger for people with an intolerance to oil (yours truly). Otak-otak (1/2 serve at aud14.50) from Sunda Dining, Melbourne. Most of the dishes at Sunda Dining can be ordered in halve-serves for those dining alone. The otak-otak was the main reason I wanted to visit Sunda and it did not disappoint. It is served like a parfait to be spreaded onto crispy rice crackers. Topped with sweet spanner crab and tangy fingerlime. So delicious and over too soon. Ridiculously addictive. Grew up eating Penang’s otak-otak and I really appreciate this modern take on otak-otak too. No wonder this is the most-ordered dish at Sunda Dining. MELBOURNE: SUNDA DINING // You know how good a place is when the pickles deserve their own post? Impeccable service, delicious South East Asian fusion food with a creative Australian twist. Dined alone on Friday for lunch after jetting in to Melbourne from Perth in the morning. The restaurant vibe was friendly and relaxed. I was seated on the bar seats directly facing the chefs and the open-plan kitchen - it was so enjoyable that I easily spent three hours here watching the chefs in action whilst slowly savouring the food. At no point was I rushed to finish my meal. To start off, the complimentary pickles are such a treat - crunchy, tangy, bit spicy and topped with peanuts. The perfect appetiser. Honestly wanted to have more of the pickles but was too shy.
