Etruscan Shrew (Suncus etruscus)
Also known as the white-toothed pygmy shrew, Savi's pygmy shrew or Etruscan pygmy shrew, the Etruscan Shew is a small species of white toothed shrew found throughout Eurasia, parts of Northern Africa, Indonesia and India. Weighing in at only 1.8 grams the Etruscan shrew is widely regarded as the smallest mammal by mass, seconded by the bumblebee bat with a smaller skull. Etruscan shrews are solitary animals and occupy a range of their own. However during mating season these small shrews will break their solitude and form pairs. Like all shrews the etruscan shrew is an opportunistic feeder and will eat whatever it can get its paws on (and can fit in its tiny tiny mouth). Etruscan shrews are also known for their incredible metabolic rate, with a heartbeat of 1000+ beats per minute. To live with this enormous rate the shrews must eat their weight in food every day.
