Sunae sat with her arms hugging her knees to her chest, humming an old song to herself as she kept watch. The four hours of sleep she’d managed to snatch hadn’t quite rejuvenated her, but at least she could stay awake now. It’d been a long day of walking, and her feet still ached. She couldn’t remember if she’d ever covered that much distance in one day before. The half-moon graced the mountains with pale light. Sunae squinted into the distance – was that a flicker of movement, there?

Drako materialized in front of her. Sunae flinched at his sudden appearance. “You startled me,” she said. “Can’t sleep?”

He tilted forward, and only then did she see the arrow shaft protruding from his back.

Sunae shot to her feet, just quickly enough to ease Drako’s collapse to the ground. “Up!” she screamed. “They’ve found us!”

A flurry of motion sounded from behind her. Rache strode forward, her hands already wreathed in flames that reached to her elbows. She spared a glance at Drako. “Is he…”

Drako made a rasping sound.

“I’ll take care of him,” Sunae promised, steel in her voice. “You take care of that.”

A knife clattered to the ground, and a crossbow bolt near it. Azuryn stepped out of the shadows, a second knife already in hand. “Crossbows,” he warned. “Careful.”

Day 16 - Naoshi

A few months ago, Koichi brought some art into the Tofugu office. In total we have three large and three small prints. All six pieces are by Japanese artist Naoshi, who has been creating art using the Japanese technique sunae ( 砂絵) since 2004. sunae literally means "sand picture" and involves the tedious process of making images with colored sand. And let me just say, the results are worth it.
