Wobbly on her legs, still, Addie hadn't wanted to move from the back of her van, but she'd left her jacket-- her favorite, old, worn leather one-- at Sun-Hee's beach house after the party. Things had heated up after a bit-- literally and figuratively-- and Addie had discarded the jacket somewhere haphazardly. Which wouldn't have been a problem, usually, except that after too long, Addie's skin had begun to itch and there were too many familiar faces all in one place. A vision had jumped to the forefront of her mind.
No, not a vision, a memory. Faces all crowded into one room, her own eyes scanning them angrily, with just one thought in mind: kill, kill, kill. She'd left without another word to anyone, sweat beading her forehead. The cool had felt nice, anyway, and so her jacket had been left behind in favor of the crisp, chilled air outside. Addie had walked all the way back to her van and checked to make sure Ronnie was either asleep or not there, before sliding into the back and curling up.
She didn't really sleep much.
But that had been a few days ago, now, and Addie wanted her jacket back. She couldn't just leave it there forever. It was her best jacket. (It was a special jacket, really, not that she'd ever admit that out loud. There were a lot of things Addie kept close to her chest, so close it felt like sometimes they disappeared inside of her.)
So she'd peeled herself up off the back of her van and climbed into the front seat, limbs aching, and drove herself down to the beach house once again.
It was quieter today. No more cars or bikes or scooters parked outside, crowding the driveway, left there by eager participants ready to party and pretend and act like the world hadn't tried to end for some of them just a few days ago.
Addie put the van in park and clambered out, stumbling only a little on her twisted leg. She'd tried shifting the bones back into the right joints at some point, but the pain was blinding and overwhelming and so it stayed crooked, dislocated in a way that made her limp and wince with each step.
She was just here for a jacket, that was all. She doubted Sun-Hee even realized Addie had brought her a gift, a stupid, tiny, cheap ass plush fox that Jin had taken from her once the crowd poured in and overtook the birthday girl.
She turned the knob and opened the door. The house was quiet but clearly occupied, soft music coming from down the hallway. Maybe Addie could just slip in, grab her jacket, and go without ever being noticed. She closed the door as quietly as possible behind her and crept down the hallway, peering into the living room, the bright colors from the walls already hurting her aching head.
There, on the back of one of the couches-- her jacket. She stepped out to grab it, tugging it on, and turning around, ready to head back out just as quickly.
Only to come face to face with Sun-Hee herself. "Uhh, hey," Addie mumbled, "just...came for my jacket."
