♥: a valentine’s day headcanon

The first time Valentine's Day came around for them, neither of them were really sure what to do since they'd never really discussed where their relationship stood. Neither of them have ever considered themselves the overly romantic types and that wasn't different on Valentine's Day. But Jem didn't want to completely ignore the day, even if she told him she didn't care if they did anything or not. And while being cuddled up in his bed with some ice cream and a movie marathon wasn't anything special, the couple dozen roses she found left on her bed when she got home were. Neither of them commented on it but she was sure to show him a little more love the next time she saw him.

One Christmas Eve, Charlie was stuck with her family and about thirty of her parents "closest friends" much to her annoyance. And since she couldn't sneak away to go spend time with the one person she felt like seeing, she spent the entire night on her phone, texting Jem desperate for a distraction. And much to her surprise and happiness, she got something better when he showed up around eleven. Her parents had both had enough to drink that they wouldn't notice her missing so she slipped out down the block to where he was waiting. She didn't expect to go anywhere special, just happy to be away from her family, but Jem had something else in mind. They wound up at the only ice rink in town and while both of them were pretty horrible on skates, she had a blast. She even appreciated the cheesiness of the mistletoe he pulled out more than once for a few long kisses.

who cooks normally?

Neither of them really cook much. When it comes to meals, they either order takeout or pick something up from a drive thru. On the rare occasion either of them cook it's usually something simple and easy that they can make in as little time as possible.

how often do they fight?

Constantly. But a majority of the time it's not anything all that serious. They're very much the couple who shows their love in a more dysfunctional way and a lot of times that involves a bit of shouting, some heavy swearing, and the occasional shove on Charlie's part. But normally it ends with them glaring at each other before one of them simply pulls the other into a heavy kiss. 

what do they do when they’re away from each other?

Texting, lots and lots of texting. Although that's just kind of a daily thing for them. Charlie has a tendency to text him late at night when she isn't already sleeping over there and just keep sending message after message until she falls asleep. 

nicknames for each other?

Charlie's been calling him "blondie" since the time she talked to him and it's one she's stuck with ever since, mainly to see it get a rise out of him. Other than that, she doesn't have many nicknames for him other than things like dumbass or asshole, etc. Jem doesn't have too many nicknames for her other than the occasional "babe" but he does have a tendency to use her full name when he wants to annoy her. 

who is more likely to pay for dinner?

It's generally a 50/50 split with them. Sometimes Jem picks up the tab, sometimes Charlie grabs it before he can, sometimes they just decide to go dutch and split the bill. They've never really had a set system to it, just going with the flow of it rather insisting that one person always pays.

who steals the covers at night?

Charlie is horrible about this, mainly because she gets cold easily. When she first started sleeping over - before they moved from friends to whatever their relationship has become - she'd steal them completely and leave him with nothing. But once them sleeping in the same bed became more intimate, he'd get to keep some of the covers at night.

what would they get each other for gifts?

Usually it's some random bullshit that they think the other will find to be funny, never anything to big or fancy. Occasionally, they'll take things a little more seriously and she'll get him something for his projects or he'll pick up a vinyl she's been eying at the record shop.

who remembers things?

Charlie will claim she's the one who remembers things best and usually Jem doesn't argue with her but the reality is he's one who can remember all the details. She never forgets birthdays or big events or anything but Jem's always better at remembering little details and surprising her with how well he knows her. 

who cusses more?

They both cuss rather frequently but when it comes down to it, Charlie's the one who'll go off on a tangent, rambling and yelling obscenity after obscenity. Usually when she gets like that, Jem just kind of steps back and lets her do her thing so she can get it out of her system.

what would they do if the other one was hurt?

The idea of either of them getting hurt doesn't sit well with either of them. As much as they brush it off, they care about each other a lot and won't hesitate to protect the other. While Jem goes along the physical route of dealing with anyone who's hurt her, Charlie gets vicious with her words and the occasional bitch slap.

who kissed who first?

Jem did, planting one on her while she was in the middle of a rant. He simply grabbed her face and kissed her, a little forceful and demanding and overall perfect that had her following his lead without a thought. When she pulled back to ask what the hell he'd done that for and he told her it was to shut her up, her only reaction was to grab his shirt and dive back in for more.

who made the first move?

In a sense, Charlie did, the day that she went up and sat down with him to strike up what seemed like a random conversation. It didn't really seem like much and she didn't realize how this would all turn out when she did it but it was what set everything in motion for them.

who started the relationship?
