18 summers ago I paved the way for my career without consciously knowing it. I decided that I wanted to be my own boss. There was a thrill about working for myself and of course working with children (those whose parents would hand them over to a teenager).
One shopping trip to Miami and all my savings later, Summer Camp began. At 16 years old I sensed that my life would never be the same. I was so right.
This year, I am celebrating the 18th year of camp and like I did years ago on the night before I still get nervous, don’t sleep well, watch the clock, I still say prayers and ask God to send lots of kids and to make our camp be safe from accidents, injuries and all harm. Can you imagine that 18 years later my own parents still greet me on the evening of the first day with the same question… “How many did you have today?”
Today I express gratitude in immeasurable ways for the ability to have made it in this field this long. I also express thanks to the many parents and grandparents who have shared their children with me and my team. I thank my parents, grandparents and my own Mom, Dad, sister, Grandma, cousin and list of bffs who played their roles and continue to play their roles in the evolution of me (and my business of and with kids).
I am truly grateful and excited to be on this journey (still). I know growth is inevitable and I’m on that freight train, cargo ship and lear jet. There is still so much more for us to do, be a part of, work towards, have fun with.
Four locations in three cities, twenty two different camps and almost a thousand children in the Caribbean is exactly what keeps my blood flowing and my passion alive.
Giving thanks tonight, today and tomorrow for camps. My tank is full. Tonight I’m very thankful.
