For my project I chose the subject of the Palm Oil industry and the environmental disaster the industry is causing to the Indonesian forests, the people, and endangered species such as the orangutan.  While a major reason these fires are burning is due to poor government regulations and profit, consumer cultures also play a part in the supply and demand of palm oil, which according to WWF is the most widely consumed vegetable oil across the planet.  According to this article on The Guardian this disaster has been labeled a “crime against humanity.”  Go here for a list of products that contain palm oil and go here to learn more about the endangered wildlife such as orangutans who now are threatened even more so by poachers due to the loss of their home. For my project I photoshopped an image of an orangutan and her baby onto an image of a forest and taped them to a wooden frame.  Behind the image is a bottle of vegetable oil with a label I printed for palm oil taped over it.  My friend drew a dollar sign on the back of my hand to represent that this “crime against humanity” is for profit and symbolizes the “hand” that is causing massive deforestation, people dying and becoming sick from the carbon monoxide, orangutans dying and fleeing their habitat, and massive areas of pristine forests being unnecessarily burned down for the sake of profit.  As the image burns away, just like in real life, what’s left behind is a material which we consume in food and use in our products, like soap and lipstick, multiple times a day without realizing the destruction we are all, in some way small or large, participating in.
