it’s pretty late, so no one should be awake to see her leave. a buzz from her phone, asking where she is and letting her know the party has begun. she quickly shoots a text back, letting them know she’s on the way. a bit of lip gloss on her lips, and she’s ready. maddie stands, slowly opening her window, when she hears a small knock at her door.

opening the door, the eldest daughter looks down at her younger sister with a scowl. “ what are you doing up? you’re supposed to be asleep! ”

peter has many, many, many habits that bother emily. he eats the last of supper, he chews on her things, he won’t let her take the first turn every time like a big sister is naturally expected to do, duh. let her take a moment to appreciate her baby brother, however; at least peter is not a screamer.

            she  doesn’t  know  how  she’s  ended  up  here.  not  that  she  minds  lily  or  her  company,  but  she  still  throws  looks  over  her  shoulder  at  anthony  who  is  busy  entertaining  the  crowd  with  one  of  his  favorite  stories  of  his  travels.  looks  that  say  can  we  please  go  home?  somehow,  in  the  midst  of  everything,  johanna  ended  up  with  lily.  but  better  over  here  than  with  that  crowd.  she  isn’t  one  for  people.  

            if  she  were  to  be  honest,  she  hasn’t  paid  much  attention  to  the  game  in  front  of  them.  mostly,  she  wants  anthony  to  notice  her  and  notice  how  much  she  wants  to  go  back  home.  tonight  was  supposed  to  be  a  quiet  evening  with  the  van  dorts.  all  these  other  guests  weren’t  supposed  to  arrive.  her  attention  snaps  back  to  lily  at  the  sound  of  her  voice.  instead  of  answering,  she  reaches  for  a  stuffed  toy.  

            she  sits  on  the  edge  of  the  couch,  hands  folded  in  her  lap  as  her  fingers  played  with  each  other  absentmindedly.  despite  her  friendships  with  the  van  dorts  (  which,  really,  are  more  of  anthony’s  friendships  --  she  doesn’t  know  if  they  are  close  enough  to  be  considered  friends  and  johanna  couldn’t  dare  ask  something  of  that  nature  ),  she  finds  herself  uncomfortable  at  times  when  left  alone  with  their  daughter.  not  that  she  minds  lily.  she  likes  her,  really.  she  posses  the  childlike  wonder  and  innocense  that  johanna  misses  with  an  ache.  but  she  does  not  know  what  to  do  with  children.  having  never  really  felt  like  one  at  all,  she  doesn’t  know  what  to  do  in  lily’s  company.
