Episode 1011: Anissida and the Cannon
Translator Notes:
There actually are two different words used here to meanĀ ācannonā.Ā Anissidaās is an 大ēĀ (oodzutsu), whereas Jessicaās is a 大ē ² (taihou).Ā The characters in the first word meanĀ ābig pipeā, whereas the characters in the second word meanĀ ābig gunā.Ā As you might imagine from that fact, an oodzutsuĀ is more of an old-timey style of cannon, whereas a taihouĀ is a more modern model.Ā You can see this in their different designs - Anissidaās is wider, more primitive, and looks more like just a cylinder with an opening at one end that one might find in use in feudal Japan, whereas Jessicaās looks more like a proper, more modern, finely-engineered cannon.Ā Thatās not relevant to the translation, but itās an interesting point I thought Iād note.
I translated Anissidaās lines in the last panel quite loosely.Ā Her initial exclamation that I translated intoĀ āWhat the heck!?ā wasĀ Bakana!?, which is always a bit difficult to translate into English.Ā By itself, the term meansĀ āidiotā orĀ āstupidā, but it can also be used figuratively to describe the situation at large, as though to say whatās happening is absurd, or ought to be impossible.Ā Itās a phrase you often hear from cocky villains, and is heard in animes like Fist of the North StarĀ quite regularly.
Her comment after that could be more literally translated as something along the lines of,Ā āHow do you have so many bullets like that!?ā, or something thereabouts.Ā Every English variant of that more literal translation sounded kinda stilted and weird, though, so I opted to translate more the spirit of the comment than its specific word choice.Ā The idea behind it that I saw was more or less her wondering what the heck is up with these weirdo opponents, so I came up with an alternate way to express this that sounded like more natural English.Ā Hopefully it came out all right.
