Wodey-Suchard is a pâtisserie and confectionery in the pedestrian zone of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Founded in 1825 by Philippe Suchard, it is one of the oldest in Switzerland and the oldest still operating in Neuchâtel.Â
The Chocolat Suchard factory struggled financially until 1842 when Philippe received a bulk order from Frederick William IV, King of Prussia, who was also the prince of Neuchâtel. This triggered a boom and soon Suchard chocolates won prizes at the London Great Exhibition of 1851 and the Paris Universal Exposition of 1855. By the end of the 19th century, Suchard was the largest chocolate producer and its advertising was seen throughout the world.
In 1901 the company introduced Milka chocolate which is still sold in its familiar purple packaging. In the late 20th century, the company was acquired and merged with a series of multinational conglomerates. The brand is now owned by Mondelez International, Inc. Â
