So, what I'm doing atm to find these things is asking "What if" questions. What if Character A falls through a gap into a shadow universe, and what if B searches them everywhere but all they find is an echo? What if... any question you can think of. Just let your thoughts wander. Maybe something will pop out.And one question leads to another and another and another.
Sometimes it is hard to think of what question to ask. When I was figuring out the dragons shapeshifting ability I asked myself, “What if one of his parents was a real dragon and the other a human?” and before I knew it I had the parents story figured out. I’ve tried to find a question to ask the main couple but I haven’t found it. Thank you though, I’ll keep that in mind.

Heh, I'll try to remember this, because I seem to have given up on fanfic as well... but maybe not forever? Your example gives me hope ^^
When that “have to write this story” feeling hits, all you can do is obey. I thought I was writing a ficlet, just to appease the voices in my head. I’ve currently got almost 14,000 words and it feels like I’ve barely scratched the surface of the story, so...
A new fandom usually does the trick, if nothing else.
