Monsters and villains and ghouls, oh my! This October, in the run up to Halloween, take a villain, monster, or ghoulish character (or maybe they’re just misunderstood!!!) and argue which Hogwarts House you think they belong in! Will they all end up in Slytherin??

Character: Sabriel (ghoulish because NECROMANCY) Book: Sabriel (and the Abhorsen series) Author: Garth Nix Genre: Fantasy, YA Hogwarts House: Gryffindor

Why that house? 

I feel like Sabriel is pretty chill with just entering death and the Old Kingdom with very little preamble once she receives the Hero’s Call, which suggests both bravery and recklessness, making her more of a Gryffindor type. She takes on the mantel of Abhorsen and hero pretty readily without truly understanding her power – her picking up the bandolier and sword is pretty similar to when Harry uses Gryffindor’s sword.

Also that entire Paperwing scene, where she’s basically like ‘I have no idea what I’m shit I hopes this works’ and then executes the entire thing flawlessy, is very Gryffindor!!

What would be their Halloween costume?  Ok so maybe it’s just my current video game obsessions, but I’m imagining her dressed as Mercy from Overwatch, and hitting Touchstone over the head with a home-made caduceus staff saying “HEROES NEVER DIE” and he’s like ‘you resurrected me ONE TIME!!’

Would they make it to the end of a horror movie? I think she would. To be honest, the Old Kingdom, and the plot of Sabriel, with all its dead and the final battle with Kerrigor, is pretty much a horror movie in itself, and I’d say she does pretty well.

Character: Julian Blackthorn (my poor misunderstood babe) Book: The Dark Artifices series Author: Cassandra Clare

Genre: Young Adult Fantasy

Hogwarts House: Slytherin ofc

Why that house? He’s been frequently described as a ruthless person with a ruthless heart, and he’s only interested in his own well-being which is extremely related to his family well-being. What’s more, his strong ideals, his capability of lying without hesitation.. could scare everyone. Because he seems a good person (he is!!) but once you discover what he’s been through and what he could do to get what he wants, he could become a very distant, cynical & tricky guy.

What would be their Halloween costume? I don't actually think he would make an outstanding Halloween costume because he would be so busy helping his siblings with theirs lol but I can imagine him wearing an original one (if he has time), like one who can scare the most, even having an ace up his sleeve so he could surprise everyone.

Would they make it to the end of a horror movie? Absolutely, he’s so good with a crossbow and also he’s a shadowhunter incredibly trained lol besides, he’s so damn clever he would make it with his eyes closed!!

We have until the end of December, right? I could totally still make a bingo if I stopped reading new books and read my TBR books...

Magpie recruits the help of a few imps and other faerie friends, and discovers many new truths about herself and the world along the way.

Why was this book on your TBR? I have a thing for faerie stories. Holly Black is one of my favorite authors for her modern faerie tales. I think I saw this at a book sale and bought it on the premise of, hey, I like faeries.

How long had it been on your TBR? Two years? Maybe more?

Was it everything you’d hoped? It was good, but it didn’t suck me in. I really loved Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, but this book didn’t grab me like those did. I prefer the faeries that are more depicted as the cunning and cruel kind that play massive politic and word games. This was more of a whimsical type of faerie. I also had a bit of a pet peeve with the slang that the faeries used, I wasn’t into it. The book was still enjoyable though.

Rec it or forget it? Rec it, but like, after I rec a bunch of other books.

Title: Daughter of the Burning City Author: Amanda Foody Genre: Fantasy Publisher: HarperCollins Year of Publication: 2017

Synopsis: Sorina is an illusion worker at a travelling circus. Her illusions are her family but she believes they’re not real, until one of them is killed.

Why was this book on your TBR? I bought it at YALC but it was very much a case of judging a book by its cover. Well judged in this case.

How long had it been on your TBR? 3 months

Was it everything you’d hoped? 
Definitely, it was interesting and unpredictable.
