So I've royally fucked myself over for my final semester at college. Originally I was going to do student housing since I was only going to be there for one more semester, but then a few friends mentioned they were getting an apartment and wanted me to live with them so I decided to do that provided my name stay off the lease since I would be graduating before the lease ended. I kept student housing as a backup since we only had a month to find a place, and then miraculously did. (1 of 3)
“I put through all the paperwork for my roommates, but then at the last second they pulled a 180 on us and said I had to be on the lease because on of the girls is international. We literally had two days before classes started and no time to look elsewhere so I signed. Then I tried to cancel my student housing assignment and found out there was a deadline to do it and now they won’t let me out of my contract. I’m now paying for an apartment out of pocket and paying for housing through my student loans. I’ve contacted and appealed to the housing department but they said I don’t demonstrate any financial changes that would prevent me from living on campus despite the fact that its $2000 more expensive than my apartment per semester. I can’t afford both of these places but now am contractually obligated to pay for both. Do you know any possible way I can get out of this? (3 of 3)”
Ugh that is awful!! I’m surprised there’s no way to get out of the housing agreement with the school. If you really can’t appeal the housing department, I would say that you have a few options:
1. Break your lease and leave your roommates to find another roommate. Live on campus. (not a good option)
2. Find a subletter! Someone who can rent your room in the apartment from you, and pay you, while you’re still on the lease. Live on campus. (great option!!)
3. Find another roommate for your apartment and somehow transfer the lease to their name. Live on campus. (not sure if possible)
4. Fight tooth and nail to break the on-campus contract, like get a lawyer involved. Live in apartment. (might be hard)
Good luck, friend!!– Mimi
