Unpopular Opinion 1: Jess doesn’t know Rory better than anyone,

I can’t understand how someone smart like Jess can be delusional to the point of claiming he understands a girl he hasn’t seen in years, and who he knew for months, better than anyone else in her life. Just doesn’t make sense to me. 

Anyway, Jess and Rory are, fundamentally, very different. They have the same love for reading, the same inquisitive nature, they are both witty and enjoy a good argument. This makes them perfect friends, but not perfect couple material. The thing is, they desire different things in life and wouldn’t share the same goals. They would also feel misunderstood in a relationship. 

Jess likes to lead a quite life. He may dislike Stars Hollow and prefer a larger city where he can loose himself in, but he just wants to have a home, a job and a group of friends he loves. He was happy working at a small publisher in S6 and is still happy holding a similar job in the revival. He put his daredevil nature behind him once he grew up. He’s humble,reserved, simple, doesn’t like to spend a lot of money on useless stuff. 

Rory is almost the opposite. She seeks excitement and adventure. It’s a coping mechanism for her and she doesn’t outgrow it. She steals a yacht with Logan after Mitchum upset her and visits Logan in London when she wants to escape. And it’s not just a coping mechanism, she wants both stability and an eventful life - and often doesn’t know how to reconcile the two. She liked Jess at first because he was exciting, but disliked how unstable and unreliable he was once they started dating. Nowadays, Jess is reliable but too constant. 

Jess never understood her hunger to become an overseas reporter, to be treated like a princess, to crusade around the world, to experience things. He thought she was like him: a cute intellectual who rebelled against the mainstream mentality. In actuality, she enjoys the world of wealth, small town celebrations and fitting in. 

In S4, Jess wanted her to leave school and go with him, but he offered no guarantees and seemed to forget that she would never leave SH and Yale for anyone. Jess also doesn’t understand her connection with her town or her mother, and doesn’t really try to at the time, 

In S6, he yells at her for dropping out of Yale and says he knows Logan is wrong for her because he has money. If he knew her so well, he would know that something must have happened to make her leave Yale and he’d know she has never been opposed to the world of the rich like Lorelai.

To put it simply, Rory thinks the world owes her everything and Jess doesn’t believe he is worthy of much.

Well, this turned into a post about why Rory and Jess are incompatible and I’ve forgotten some points I wanted to make…sorry for the confusing answer

Unpopular Opinion 2: Xander Harris is great

Yes he is! The fandom really hates Xander and I still don’t understand why. I think he’s an interesting, vivacious character. He can be funny, idiotic, brave, sensitive, insensitive, etc. He’s interesting because he’s flawed in a relatable and understandable way. But his qualities outweigh his flaws by far. He’s a great friend, brave without superpowers, selfless, witty, charismatic. I think he definitely grows with time (he gives some wonderful speeches in S5 and S7) and that some of his flaws can be explained by immaturity. At heart, Xander is a true hero. He’s great!

My all-time favorite character: 1. Paris, 2. Emily, 3. Logan. These are my all-time faves. Can’t narrow it down to one. However, gun to the head, I would pick Logan. He’s the one I care the most about and the one I root for. Paris doesn’t change and Emily is one of the Gilmore Girls. Both characters are always part of the story. Logan, though, being one of the love interests, depends on Rory and on her story, so he may or may not be in it. Case in point, if ASP did AYITL 2 what would Logan’s role be?

A character I didn’t use to like but now do: Jess. Seeing Jess in S6 and in the Revival made me like him more than I did the first time I watched S2/S3. I recently did a rewatch of the first three seasons and felt positively about Jess. Still don’t like literati, but I appreciate how Jess didn’t give a fuck about Lorelai. Poor thing wasn’t used to someone not falling at her feet *rolls eyes*

A character I used to like but now don’t: Dean. Believe it or not, I actually liked Dean in S1 and took his side sometimes in S2/S3. However, seasons 4 and 5, and rewatching the show, made me dislike him. 

A character I’m indifferent about: Lorelai or Luke. I really dislike Lorelai in the first three seasons and just don’t care about her overall. However, my feelings toward Lorelai are kind of negative, so I think a true neutral is Luke. 

A character who deserved better: Logan Huntzberger. 

A ship I’ve never been able to get into: Lorelai/Luke. I’ve never rooted, cheered or cried for them and mostly thing they are one big mess.

A ship I’ve never been able to get over: Rory/Logan.

A cute, low-key ship: Emily/Richard. I think it’s cute how they laugh together and ask each other rhetorical questions like “Did you hear that Richard, Lorelai thinks […]”

An unpopular ship but I still enjoyed it: Lorelai/Chris. (I don’t think Rory/Logan qualifies as an unpopular ship?)

A ship that was totally wrong and never should have happened: Lorelai/Max. I really don’t like Max.

My favorite storyline/moment: I adore all of the Logan and Rory bits in S5. I loved how they fell in love and how the writers made a bold move regarding their relationship. Rory had to work to get Logan and actually chose to enter a non-exclusive relationship. I very much like Rory in season 5. She’s funner, more adventurous, more confident, more aware of what she wants and/or needs, etc.

A storyline that should have never been written: Perhaps Luke and Nichole? What a waste of time. The show always sucked at giving Luke a love interest other than Lorelai. 

My first thoughts on the show: It’s an entertaining soap opera.
