Our Travel Favorites: STYLEVISA
We recently encountered a very cool site, STYLEVISA, an online marketplace for global culture and design goods. In short, they sell everything you need to create an eclectic, cozy, and culturally rich home for yourself. We want it all!Â
We thought we’d find out a little more about this online gem, so we could share the scoop with you! Here is our interview with impressive STYLEVISA Co-Founder, Suki Mulberg Altamirano.
Â
How did STYLEVISA come about?
My husband, Eduardo, and I co-founded STYLEVISA late last year. We’ve always been inspired by multi-cultural design and impressed by the variety, style and quality craftsmanship of items we’ve come across on our own travels. We wanted to find a way to provide access to unique home dĂ©cor, accessories and style finds from all over the world when travel isn’t immediately in reach.Â
In addition to experiences traveling, a big part of our inspiration came from time we’ve spent living around the world. Between the two of us we’ve counted everywhere from Mexico City to New York City, Seattle, Paris, Houston, Florence and San Francisco as home. One of the things we enjoy most about STYLEVISA is that it gives us the opportunity not only to travel, but to interact with designers and artisans of all kinds of backgrounds. It has also been a great way to use our language skills (together we’re fluent in English, Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese).Â
What is your role at STYLEVISA?Â
As co-founder of STYLEVISA, my day involves everything from scouting new designs to negotiating with brand partners, managing PR activities, creating content for our blog and social media channels as well as business development. As a young company, there’s always a lot going on, and not really such thing as a typical day. My background is in communications and public relations and given that, I’m responsible for getting the word out about STYLEVISA, managing consumer outreach and spearheading our PR efforts with journalists, stylists and interior designers. While maybe not included in a typical day, traveling in search of new designs is a part of the job too – and one of the best perks!
How do you choose destinations & products for STYLEVISA?
In the start, we pulled a lot of inspiration from places we had lived or visited over the years. When creating our assortment we look for designs that are reflective of artisans’ and designers’ backgrounds, but aren’t limited to ethnic styles. Our distinct and eclectic assortment combines both traditional and contemporary global designs that are of course travel-inspired. We want STYLEVISA to be a place where you find classic designs that can be incorporated in a universal setting, while also emphasizing contemporary designs that are mindful of traditional backgrounds and aesthetics.  In selecting destinations we look to areas with a strong sense of design. We also love unique and distinct places that are sometimes overlooked for the larger fashion and design capitals of the world.Â
When we’re not traveling internationally in search of new finds, we’re careful to keep an eye out for inspiring designs right here in the US. We also spend a lot of time researching new design aesthetics and emerging designers.
What are 5 of your favorite finds?
Images d’Orient Espresso CupsÂ
I’m from Seattle originally and a huge coffee fanatic. These espresso cups come in individual gift tins that work great for storing little things afterwards. They’re from a Lebanese brand, Images d’Orient, that utilizes fantastic Mediterranean design.Â
Â
Scents & Feel Fouta Guest TowelsÂ
One of our very first finds for STYLEVISA were these hand-woven fouta guest towels from Tunisia. They’re so soft and a bit more glamorous than your average kitchen or bathroom hand towel. We have them in all kinds of colors and patterns, including this gray/azure combination, which is new for fall/winter 2012.
Â
Sabre Nouvelle Old Fashioned Teaspoons Gift Set
These teaspoons are a French find with great eye-catching tones. We use them with coffee all the time, but they’re also great with dessert.Â
Â
Nuance Bottle Opener
From Denmark, this brand Nuance is fantastic at combining sleek design with clever ideas. This bottle opener, which looks like a drop of liquid you’d see on a sparkling cold drink, is surprisingly light and easy to use with an ergonomic shape.
Â
Santa Clara del Cobre Copper Vase
This is such an easy vase to fill with one simple bud. From Mexico, each is a truly one of a kind with a striking hand-hammered finish.Â
Â
What have been the most interesting or surprising trips you've taken?
Eduardo (my husband and co-founder) is from Mexico City so I have to admit we may be biased, but it is always one of our favorite locations to visit. Architecturally it’s such a beautiful city and with a vibrant energy. One of Mexico City’s oldest neighborhoods is La Colonia Roma, and an afternoon walking there features a beautiful mix of architecture and green spaces (and a delicious bite to eat in the neighborhood at a cafĂ© called Delirio). We make sure to visit a few times a year and always pick up beautiful handcrafted goods in the local markets.Â
We also love a great road trip. There’s nothing better than being on the open road in your car with a great playlist. This year we took a trip on US Highway 50 across stunning landscapes in Nevada and Utah. It was coined the “Loneliest Road in America” – and for good reason! It passes through several ghost towns and you can easily drive for miles without passing another car. The scenery is truly memorable.  Here are two snapshots we took along the way.
Have you inspired your friends and SYLEVISA users to travel?
I certainly hope that we've inspired our friends and STYLEVISA visitors to travel. We love sharing travel tips and stories with our friends. Personal recommendations from people you know can become memorable parts of travels and there's nothing more inspiring than seeing friends' travel photos, to make you want to get out there and explore someplace new!
What's next for STYLEVISA?
As a young retailer, we’re always testing new ideas and are working to develop a dialogue with our audience. Incorporating their feedback into STYLEVISA is a priority for us. In addition to adding new destinations and designs to our assortment, we’d like to build out the travel-related content on our site. In the process of launching and growing STYLEVISA, we’ve had the opportunity to visit so many fantastic, underappreciated places along the way, and we’d love to share more about those and our favorite stops!
