many years ago, i posted that it was hot in the UK. i included the temperature where I was and the sentence ‘how do you people do this ‘heat’ thing’. this was supposed to be a reference to the fact that i knew it wasn’t actually that hot compared to other countries, but i was indeed struggling, and as such i held respect and fear for those in hotter places. it was supposed to be a minor vent that like, 8 people would read, maybe.

unfortunately, everybody else read it as ‘hello in the UK it’s the hottest of anywhere on the planet, i think! unless i’m wrong? please tell me the exact temperature of where you are’

i got these messages for weeks. weeks of people going ‘that’s nothing! in singapore it’s-’. it got to like 300,000 notes, making it by far my post popular post. there’s copies of the post in buzzfeed articles. i think at one point i changed my ask box title to ‘i don’t care how hot it is where you are’.

and then naturally because it’s tumblr, the discourse began. lots of people from the UK and similar countries showing up to point out 1) none of our houses have air con, 2) our houses are built to keep heat in, and 3) every time we get a heat wave, a lot of old and vulnerable people die. then people having opinions on air con and 'well [country] doesn’t have aircon either and-’, and the role of humidity in things, and whether mocking the original post was actually ableist or some other -ism, and it just. kept. going.

this was heatpost, my friend. i fear talking about it because i fear getting a new slew of messages telling me the approximate temperature in arizona or whatever. i genuinely think heatpost was what sent me from always trying to be sweet and kind and lovely to sometimes being like ‘this is a dumb message and you should feel bad for sending it’ lmao.
