does anyone else use Study Together? I like the idea of it. But I don't know about how much it'll help me focus.
not-a-vacation
hii everyone!!
i just have a few days left for my vacation to get over so all i’m doing atm is finishing up my holiday homework [and hopefully getting some revision in!!]
things that went well in the past week
-i found a book that i really liked and needed [ruskin bond’s simple living] and i read a bit, something i haven’t had the time to do since i started this academic year
- i decided i’d do better on midterms and prove to myself i can
- i joined a mentorship for a subject i wanted to take up so i can see if i’d like it
-i made plans for my dream university and did some research
-i talked to a few new people and felt better about my barely existent social life :)
things that didn’t go well
- i did not learn how to socialize again, although i did try
-i procrastinated most of my homework and i’m too afraid to ask my teachers about it five days before submission
-i had a few crises about how people see me and how i label myself but i think that’s sort of cooled down now
all in all i’m a bit scared for the upcoming fulltime offline classes, but hopefully i can brave them!! it’ll be a tough month ahead but ~~survival mode~~

Level 1 — Lesson 1
Hi! This blog is made for korean learners who use TalkToMeInKorean as a main ressource. We will provide you complements to their lessons, such as examples, vocabulary and expressions. We are definitely not trying to replace TTMIK ! This blog wouldn’t even exist without them :)
LVL 1 LESSON 1 : 안녕하세요, 감사합니다
TTMIK first lesson is about how to say Hello and Thank You. Please refer to it before reading this post. (http://talktomeinkorean.com/lessons/l1l1/ (PDF & MP3 available))
For those who may don’t know yet, there are two different speech level in korean, which are called « 존댓말 » and « 반말 ». « 존댓말 » is the polite / formal way of talking, whereas « 반말 » is the informal one. It is very important to know when to use them, so you don’t seem rude.
You have to use 존댓말 when :
- You’re talking to a stranger, or someone you don’t really know
- You’re talking to someone older than you
- You’re talking to someone you need to show respect to (teacher, boss, parents, etc.)
- You’re talking to friends that aren’t so close to you
You can use 반말 when :
- You’re talking to a close friend
- You’re talking to someone who is obviously younger than you
- You’re talking to someone your age
- The person you’re talking to, if she/he is older, gave you the permission to use 반말
It’s important to mention level speeches when it comes to greeting. You won’t say « Hello » to a friend the same way as you would say it to your teacher.
Hello, 존댓말 :
- 안녕하십니까? : very formal, often used in announcements / news
- 안녕하세요 : the most commonly used
- 여보세요? : used when answering the phone / interphone only
Hello, 반말 :
- 안녕 : could be translated as « Hi » (or « Bye », still in 반말)
- 안뇽 : wrong, but cute way of writting/pronouncing « 안녕 »
- ㅎㅇ : (koreanized version of « Hi », 하이, used when texting only)
Sentence examples (예문) in 존댓말 :
/!\ Those sentences may be a bit hard to understand. If you don’t, don’t worry. You will understand them through the next grammar lessons.
Vocabulary (단어) :
* 여러분 : everyone
* 여동생 : little sister
* 얘들아 : kids, guys (이 this + 아이들 kids + 아 calling someone) /!\ 반말
* 거기 : here
* 댁 : house (polite form of 집)
1. 여러분 안녕하십니까?
= Hello everyone. (in TV news)
2. 안녕하세요, 저는 박찬열입니다. 처음 뵙겠습니다.
= Hello, I am Park Chanyeol. Nice to meet you (literally : I am meeting you for the first time)
3. 안녕하세요, 저는 김지관의 여동생이에요.
Hello. I’m Kim Jikwan’s sister.
4. 여보세요, 거기 김진영 씨 댁입니까?
= Hello? Is this Kim Jinyeong’s house ?
5. 얘들아 안녕 !
= Hi guys / hi kids !
Now that you know how to use « Hello », let’s focus on « Thank you » :
Thank you, 존댓말 :
- 감사합니다 : most commonly used
- 고맙습니다
- 감사해요 : very few people use this
- 고마워요 : less formal than 고맙습니다 and 감사합니다. Use it with people you are close to
Thank you, 반말 :
- 고마워
If you had to remember only three ways to say « Thank you », it would be : 감사합니다 (formal, polite), 고마워요 (polite, to people you are close to), 고마워 (informal).
Sentence examples (예문) in 존댓말 :
/!\ Sadly, it may be too early for you to create sentences like « Thank you for […] ». But don’t worry, we will explain it later ! But here are some sentence examples that we will explain later :
Vocabulary (단어) :
* 이메일 : e-mail
* 보내다 : to send
* 많은 : a lot (noun form of 많다)
1. 이메일 보내줘서 고마워. (반말)
= Thank you for sending me an email !
2. 이메일 부내주셔서 감사합니다. (존댓말)
= Thank you for sending me an email.
3. 많은 예문을 주셔서 감사합니다.
= Thank you for giving us lots of sentence examples :)
That’s all for today !
If you have any question or any other sentence example, don’t hesitate to comment.

Happy Friendship Day – Lakshya Academy
