A lot of gatekeepers will hear âace people are lgbt+â and they will say âum not cishet ones lmao.â
There are two things you could be trying to say when you say âcishet aces are not lgbt+,â and here they are:
1) âIf you are ace, you are inherently lgbt+, unless you are cisgender and heteroromantic.â (That is, until IÂ âdiscoverâ that you are cisgender and heteroromantic)
2) âIf you are ace, you are not inherently lgbt+, but some lgbt people also are ace.â (That is, being ace is totally irrelevant to being lgbt+)
Itâs a very minor distinction, but hereâs my point. Letâs say youâre a âcishet ace exclusionistâ (thatâs aphobia, babey). Somebody walks up to you in lgbt+ space, or messages you on an lgbt+ forum, or whatever, and as a gatekeeping asshole itâs your job to discover if they are really lgbt+.Â
They say, âHi, my nameâs Skylar, Iâm asexual.â (Itâs rare that somebodyâs sexuality comes up so quickly, but for the sake of ease, letâs leave it like this.)
Is Skylar ânot lgbt+â? Or do you not yet have enough information? Skylar could be a trans or nonbinary individual. Skylar could be bisexual or pansexual or gay.
Is your instinct âyes, Skylar is welcome here unless I find out that they are a âcishetââ or is your instinct âno, Skylar is not welcome here until they identify themselves using a different lgbt identity.âÂ
If your instinct is the first option, youâve already essentially admitted that being ace is âenoughâ to make somebody lgbt. Skylarâs gender and sexuality donât come up again, and Skylar has a great ace time with other lgbt+ people and carries on their life literally harming nobody, with their romantic orientation never becoming relevant. :) Itâs not about âresourcesâ and itâs not about privilege and itâs not about oppression, youâre just making it about hating on other-gender attraction of any kind: would you treat bi and pan individuals with other-gender partners (or attractions) this way? Would you treat trans individuals with other-gender partners (or attractions) this way? Donât be a gatekeeping asshole, my friend.
If your instinct is the second option, you now have to get Skylar to âproveâ that they are lgbt+, because youâre a piece of shit. By your standards, Skylar must be trans/nb or bi/pan/homoromantic to âproveâ that they are lgbt+.
âIâm aromantic and cisgender,â Skylar says. âI actually desire no romantic or sexual relationship at all.â
Has Skylar âprovedâ that they are lgbt? They arenât heteroromantic, after all.Â
âYeah, Skylarâs lgbt, because they arenât heteroromantic.â So youâve admitted that ace people are lgbt+ even if they are not also bi, trans, gay, or lesbian.
âNo, Skylarâs not lgbt, because they are not bi/trans/gay/etc.â So then your argument ânot cishet ones lmaoâ actually means nothing, because Skylar does not identify as âhetâ or experience other-gender attraction at all (not heterosexual, not heteroromantic, not het-anything). Hmmmm looks like it was just aphobia all along.Â
Yâall can take your shitty âum not cishet ones lmaoâ and go. Yâall have no critical thinking skills.Â
