11/22 A critter ate my pumpkin! Something dragged my moldy lil pumpkin to one of the chairs on my balcony and ate it! The wine is becoming transparent, I can see a lot of dead bugs and insects in the glass.
Identity
9/21
This is my first day photographing my TIME project. I will be photographing this same fall themed setup for about a month (maybe longer). The focus of this project is the wine and dish soap mixture in the center. Once the fruit flies drink the mixture they will die in the glass. I surrounded the glass with other fruits and vegetables that will eventually rot, hopefully resulting in more fruit flies.
I gathered the grapes from my grandmothers porch and picked the apples from a nearby orchard. I wanted this piece to feel more organic and less store bought.
Place Statement of Intent
For my Place project I was playing with a couple of ideas! I decided to go with one of my original ideas, my most current trip to Seattle. I went on this milestone of a vacation during the summer of 2015. My uncle lived out there and we were staying with him and his family in Olympia. He owned a beautiful house located on a beach there, we were blessed to have a such a breath taking view.
This trip was more then an aesthetic one. My uncle was suffering from a brain tumor, my mother said this might be last trip out to see him in this mental state. Some of my last memories with him and that side of the family happened during this trip.
One of my most vivd memories from that trip was seeing Dale Chihuly’s artwork in person. The glass work was mesmerizing and created a truly outstanding installation. I experienced this installation with my cousins, this was one of the last pleasant memories I have being around them.
Form: I Will be constructing a combination of a collage and sculpture. It will be made out of photographs that I will glue to canvas. The photographs will be printed in black and white. The Dale Chihuly inspired plastic will be made out of plastic bottles and coffee filters that I will distort and color with markers.
Process: I will print and adhere photos from that trip on canvas, then I will attach Dale Chihuly inspired colorful plastic pieces over top the collage. This will be a 2D and 3D piece of artwork.
Content: It will represent the time I spent with my family during that vacation and the memorable art installation we were able to experience together.

Place Ideas
1.) My first idea is to do a collage of photos from a family trip to Seattle. My uncle lives there and was becoming very sick, this was a sort of goodbye trip for us before his cancer got really bad. This trip harbors some of the last good memories I had with him. Seattle is one of my favorite places to visit, not only because it’s a beautiful city but the memories I have there with estranged and lost family members.
2.) My second idea has to do with my grandparent’s house. My brother and I spent a lot of time there growing up, and still do. My grandpa built a grape arbor for my grandma in her garden. Every summer grape’s hang down the sides of it and we all enjoy a handful of sweet and sour grapes. My idea is to do an abstract watercolor color painting of the grape leaves, then embroider the grapes to the watercolor paper.
3.) My third idea is to depict a dinner table. My family always gathers over food, no matter the location there will always be a meal involved when we’re all together. Even though the location where the holiday dinners take place changes, the sense of togetherness is constant. Sitting around a table with my family gives me the same feelings as if we were at my grandma’s kitchen table. I would draw this in pencil and add touches of color with watercolor.
Place Research Journal
Justin Favela
https://www.cartermuseum.org/exhibitions/puente-nuevo-justin-favela
Form: Favela creates large scale installation art pieces constructed out of the same materials piñatas are made out of.
Content: Favela draws inspiration from his Mexican and Guatemalan roots. He recreates famous artworks in a new fun way.
Process: In the piece above, he applies the piñata paper to the walls to create colorful landscapes.
Gabriel Dawe
https://www.artsy.net/artist/gabriel-dawe
Form: Gütermann thread is attached to frames and displayed uniquely within a space.
Content: How is this space being used? This piece is large, but also appears very light. Is this an object taking up space? “Dawe’s expanses of sensuous thread seek to alter the way we perceive and experience our bodies in space.”
Process: This is a site specific installation piece. Each thread is attached to a frame at an individual angel. Visually pleasing color gradients seem to appear from thin air.
Joshua Smith
http://www.iknowjoshuasmith.com/work/brooklyn-bodega/
Form: Smith creates miniatures of real places and things. These tiny pieces of artwork shrink down real scenes.
Content: Why is such an overlooked scene of urban culture being focused on here? This looks just like an average street corner.
Process: By shrinking these common urban scenes, Smith makes the viewer pay attention to their beauty.
Julie Wilkinson and Joyanne Horscroft “Makerie Studio”
https://mymodernmet.com/the-makerie-studio-cloud-city/
Form: These works were created by carving and sculpting paper.
Content: Why are there little hidden things in the middle of these paper sculptures?
Process: The light feeling these artworks give off adds to the sense of fragileness. The detailed Moroccan patterns transports you to another world.
Jack Daly
https://www.behance.net/gallery/41712999/Wanderlust-Alphabet-A-E
Form: Pieces apart of Daly’s alphabet collection were created using typography and graphic design skills
Content: Why did he choose to stick to a certain color scheme for each letter/city? Why did he choose cities?
Process: Each letter embodies the feelings and activities Daly felt when in each of them.
Identity Post Critique Response
I enjoyed making and presenting my identity project! One strength we identified in critique was the embellishment and the fabric used. The sarape inspired fabric read that it came from hispanic heritage, which was intended. One weakness that was identified in critique was that there were only six stars on the flag. This had no symbolism behind it, but symbolism was found within the critique. I personally also wished that the avocado fabric turned a more vibrant color, instead of the pale nude.
From this critique I learned that I should have more symbolism behind the six stars on the flag. Shaun suggested that I relate it back to astrological sign, which I will end up doing.
