My five stages of sketching
step 1- I do a basic sketch with a light brush to get the proportions, composition and pose that I would like.
step 2- I refine my original sketch with a dark pencil to create features, expression and the exact lines I want to draw over for my line art.
step 3- I create a vector layer and draw my final lines over my sketch and get rid of any unwanted lines with the vector selection. After I’ve completed this i make sure there is no gaps for colour to bleed from when I am colouring.
Step 4- I fill in the line with a basic layer of colour.
Step 5- I shade, highlight and bend to create depth and dimension.
note:
I would usually do serval more layers for extra details, elements and backgrounds. Although for this tutorial I just wanted to show how a create a basic drawing on studio clip paint. This is how I would usually draw manga although I want to try painting without line art next time. I am going to use this sketch to experiment fire and glow effects on.
Studio Clip Paint
Today i have been experimenting with tools and filters on studio clip paint. I drew this using a Wacom tablet. The tablet and the pen can pick up pressure and different strokes which helps my art look more natural and authentic. It also only picks up movement from the pen which means I don’t have to worry about my hand smudging anything. I have wanted to work with digital art for awhile and since lockdown is happening again, I have decided to explore it.
This piece was inspired by the studio clip paint tutorial I posted the other day. I did this drawing based on the narrators piece by referencing the composition, flow and art style. I have drawn it in my own style but it is clear I have worked from the tutorial to get familiar with the new software. The layout on my software was different to the tutorial so I got lost and did a lot of the shading in my own way and luckily enough I actually like how the hair and highlights came out.
This was more to test out different brushes and techniques then to actually express myself as an artist. I like the aesthetic of some of these edits, but I know I could improve on my drawing, shading and editing. These are all things I aim to improve over the next few weeks when using this software. I want to create illustrations and abstract art with this but I am still figuring out why and how I will do that. I love drawing in comic, manga and illustration styles so I’m excited to explore this more. I also decided to experiment with watermarks using my Tumblr name so that when i make more work like this in the future i can sign it and people can find my blog from my work.
