Blog #12: The Pakistani Student Society & their Charity Eid Event
The diversity of Leicester is even visible in the amount of student societies they have. I joined the Pakistani Student Society (PakSoc) and attended their biggest event of the year yesterday: Eid Mehfil! (Basically just a late Eid party.)
When I asked the girl who was selling tickets what the dress code was, she said: Eid-ish. And this got me thinking: wth is Eid-ISH? You’re either dressed like it is Eid, or not. As I explained to my friend, who’s not Pakistani and thankfully joined me for this event, Pakistani people experience most things in extremes: emotions, feelings, needs, appetite… Exaggerating is the norm. So when you say ‘Eid-ish’ you know that people can walk in dressed as if they’re the groom’s brother or sister, or just walk in that jeans and shirt they wore when they were cleaning their room. Eid-ish…
There was a dhol, two students apparantly volunteered to sing some oldskool Atif Aslam songs (sigh…), a photobooth (which was closed by the time I wanted to go by for a photograph), a raffle (which I didn’t win) and of course…a buffet with foods from all over the world (which was amazing)!Â
The money which was brought in during the night and from the ticket sales went to an NGO named 'EDHI Foundation' (new window), which is based in Pakistan and does some amazing work. It was a fun night out and good to meet students who share the same roots organising an event which brings everyone together for something which we all share a deep, OBSESSIVE love for: food.
