The public place that I would like to observe is the Student Center. This is the place that I visit many times every day. I often get my coffee drink in the morning at student center and take a sit there to relax. Because there is not many people in the morning, it’s a good opportunity to sit there enjoy your coffee and make a day plan in the morning. There is a dentist in the student center as well, student have an opportunity to do their teeth. And there is a convenience store in student center, you can get your drink and food there.
What do you see? Hear? Smell?
Once you visit student center, you will see many tables located there and lots of food shop are there. The most surprise me is they do have chinese food. Also, if people would like to choose healthy food, there is sunway that you can choose. Obviously, what you can smell is all delicious food smell. What you can hear is all about student talk about assignment, TV shows and their friends during the lunch time. Also, you can hear music from the second floor, there are students dancing in the second floor in the afternoon. Actually, second floor is a place that student mostly like, they can play video games, dancing and chatting there on the sofa. This is the most surprise me as well. In addition, the second floor of student center do have a health center. It’s make sure that student and people in campus have an opportunity to see doctor if there are not comfortable. And, the most unforgettable thing is my friend and my brother took the graduate photo on the second floor. I was there with there that day.
What purpose and intended use of student center?
The purpose and intended use of student center is provide a place for student to have their meal. The intended use for student center is offer a place for student to communicating and hold different events. Because student from different country can learn different culture from the evens.
Although, I have visit student center often, it do change at different times and different days. During the week day lunch times, the student center is full and long line up in the food court, but not that busy in the morning and evening. However, during the festival days, they do have special activity. For instance, during the Chinese new year, they hold the Lion Dance events at student center and it’s amazing.

In the heart of the University of Toronto, Scarborough campus is the Student Centre building, which is a public space that all the students can enjoy their food and communicate with strangers. It has a modern, clean, and simple design but provides a nice visual effect. When people step into the building, they could hear the noises and smell the food there. It makes students have a sense of familiarity, which fosters a home environment.
When I was accessing the preparatory course and lived on campus, I often visit this place with my classmates before having dinner. Three years past, I still like to spend time having food and meeting with my friends there. It is relaxing and exciting when you finish one-day classes and go through the school buildings to find delicious food. Besides, there are a variety of events held near the tables that always have club activities, charity donations, and small-scale markets. By attending these activities, I can get more life and student experiences as I need in my spare time.
This three-storey building opened in 2004, including a variety of offices, associations and shops. Outside the building is a U-shaped lane that accepts temporary parking and a large green quad. When stepping into the building, on the first floor are open spaces for eating and talking with many food outlets around. The Student Centre was built to provide students with a place of relaxing and meeting, which constructs a network for people to develop their social skills, expand their minds, and gain information from new perspectives. Beneath this floor, there are food outlets that have more seats. Also, the Student Centre also provides dental, health and wellness centre, and spaces for woman rights for students. These offer a spiritual and careful room for students to seek safety and shelter.
What surprises me is the connectivity and light space. When I sit on the second floor studying, it is very convenient to walk downstairs to have a snack or go to the health and wellness centre. The connectivity in this building is. Whether students sit in the seats on the first floor or studying on the second floor, they also experience brightly and light space which equips with excellent facilities and arrangements.
The Student Centre Building is where I want to recommend students to explore that it is not only a place for having fun and taking a meal but also where we can get life and student experiences in our spare time after classes. All thanks to this resource of communication, I’ve recognised and made great friendships starting at this place.
When you first step in the student centre, also known as the student jungle due to the popularity and crowdedness, you can witness the variety of food options, the student union office, tables of student initiatives around the perimeter of the back wall trying to get the attention of the students passing by. At first sight, the presence of student’s take-over the student center, with this, one is greeted by loud noise from students. As it hits noon, the rush of students arrives, extensive line-ups begin to form outside the food kiosks and, seats get occupied fast. I can feel bags grazing my back as I sit on one of the stools, making my observation. I notice during this time of rush hour, the looks of concern on peoples face with a tray in their hand, but no seat to be found to sit to enjoy their long-awaited lunch. However, the food is not the only thing that attracts students to SC, it is the social interaction they crave, the mild break from school to catch up with classmates and friends. The student centre is a place that facilitates interaction, the openness and the layout is inclusive for conversation, the round tables in the centre of the food kiosks are designed for groups to interact with each other. On the other hand, the bar stools that face the round table are meant for individuals, people who come and go, who require their alone time.
Although the space is large, only a small portion of the student centre is dedicated for seating (capacity of 60 people), the rest is designated for walking space and wide halls to reduce congestion in between class times. As more people enter the space, the more congested and louder it becomes. The Air is filled with different acoustics - mindless chatter, whispers, private conversations and clanging plates which can all be heard at once. Sometimes I forget music is played in this location because the volume of the conversations can overpower the sound of the music in the background.
Another visual observation about the student centre is that all around the cafeteria are large colourful posters, created and attached by student groups. The goal is to have it seen by the most people and increase discussion about the poster and the best place to receive the most attention has be the student centre because of its popularity. As a result, student centre is a place to recognize school issues, to promote social matters and encourage students to get involved. Besides posters, there are also several ‘no smoking’ signs that have been put up. Despite that, students still violate the instruction by smoking in the cafeteria area.
The restaurants produced a strong smell that insinuates the poor air circulation of the space, yet, I paid no mind to the smell; in fact, I enjoyed it, the aroma of smell consisted of fries, teriyaki sauce and even the infamous subway sandwiches managed to produce a smell that could persuade someone to buy a sub. However, the seating area can be unsanitary at times, I am sitting on a table with speckles of rice along the table, and dirty napkins, I can sense that no one cleans up after themselves.
My favourite part about the space is the natural light beaming from the ceiling high windows that had took over one wall. Unfortunately, the view outside is arrayed with the new construction to accommodate the growing population of the school. Regardless, the student centre remains bright and contributes to the optimistic and energetic vibe of the place. For me, this place represents freedom, the opportunity to be on campus without dealing with school. For instance, you get to enjoy the benefits of being at school; such as, socializing and eating great food, without, dealing with school work, assignment deadlines, and observing lecture halls that reminds you that you are at school.
Soon the rush dies down as the next round of classes begins, the loud conversation overheard is now extinct and the music can be clearly heard. I will be coming back to the student centre again, for food, for interaction, to clear my head, the list is on going. There are plenty of things to do here and plenty to observe.
