Delay in Toilet Construction at Tiruppur Civic School Forces Students to Cope with Poor Facilities
A prolonged delay in the construction of toilets at a Tiruppur City Municipal Corporation-run middle school in Ranganathapuram has left students distressed, with five girls even quitting the school earlier due to the lack of proper facilities. Around 500 students — both boys and girls — study at the institution located in Ward 25.
Students Struggle Amid Incomplete Construction
For the past three months, construction of new toilets for boys and girls has been underway, but delays have forced students to rely on temporary and inadequate arrangements.
“Children from Sirupooluvapatti, Ranganathapuram, Jayalalithaa Nagar, Amarjyothi Garden, Samundi Nagar, Anaipalayam, and Jeeva Nagar come here to study. Since the old toilets were in a poor condition, residents raised complaints. Though new toilets began construction months ago, the work is still incomplete. For a school with 500 children, this is unacceptable,” said M. Kumaresan, a local resident.
Initially, students were allowed to use toilets in nearby houses, but residents eventually withdrew permission, citing inconvenience.
Interim Arrangements by the School
The school’s headmistress, Latha, confirmed that the old toilets were completely unusable. “Girls are being allowed to use the two toilets meant for female teachers, while boys have been given access to a makeshift toilet made of tin sheets. Construction began in June after the bhoomi puja in May, and work is now nearing completion,” she said.
She added that five students left before construction began due to the lack of toilets but confirmed no further dropouts have occurred since the work started.
Civic Body Promises Early Completion
According to A. Thangaraj, AIADMK councillor of Ward 25, the toilet project is being implemented at a cost of ₹27 lakh. “The work faced slight delays from the contractor but has now been sped up. Tiling work was carried out this week, and the toilets will be ready soon,” he assured.
Attempts to reach Corporation Commissioner M.P. Amit for comment were unsuccessful.

For students, especially girls, lack of proper toilet facilities is not just an inconvenience but a major barrier to education. While construction may be nearing completion, the delay has already caused avoidable hardship — and even student dropouts. Residents and parents continue to urge the corporation to prevent such issues in the future with better planning and timely execution
