Draco knows what Lupin is the moment they’re in the same room together. It’s the way his instincts go haywire around him, like they can’t decide if he’s predator or prey. There are only a few creatures that incite that reaction, and only one that can pass as a human this well, only one that makes any sense.
He goes to Snape that night, making sure no one can overhear them, and demands, “A werewolf? Really?”
His lip curls back. “Dumbledore clearly believes in allowing dangerous creatures inside the school.”
“I don’t go feral,” he snaps. “I control myself. I’m only dangerous when I want to be. He’s dangerous whether he likes it or not.”
Later, when he’s gotten himself caught up in something he really would have preferred to stay out of, he makes a choice he never wanted to make.
“Run!” Draco snaps, feeling the terror claw up his throat as Lupin transforms in front of them. “I’ll handle him.”
“What are you going to do?” Harry snaps.
He doesn’t have time to explain. He doesn’t want to explain. But he he lets the transformation start, lets his eyes shift from grey to silver and his pupil expand, lets his nails extend into claws while gills erupt uselessly agaisnt his neck and scales scatter across his skin.
Harry and Hermione stumble away from him, dragging Ron with his broken leg back with them. Sirius Black only stares.
“I’m going to lead him to the Great Lake,” he answers, voice hoarse, coming out wrong around his too sharp teeth.
Whether he’s the predator or the prey depends on their environment, after all.
