Whitehouse “Wriggle Like A Fucking Eel” (2002)
Ask yourself how often singles for noise albums come out? Almost never. Yet Whitehouse decided to release one to make “Wriggle Like A Fucking Eel” one of their stand-out tracks and also the one to make me a lifelong Susan Lawly / Come Organisation fan and beyond. Whitehouse were never the ones to shy away from obscure topics, at least for those outside the UK. Have you ever heard of Michael Barrymore? Niether had I until someone cracked the lyrics and subject matter and it pertained to the death of his party guest Stuart Lubbock, presumably sexually assaulted and killed then found in Barrymore’s own swimming pool after the fact. Whitehouse were always ones to push the envelope but they not only went with it, they tossed it around for the whole world to hear. It’s Whitehouse at their highly acidic…and Philip Best at some of his most viciousness. Oh, the days where he would go for the kill. All the Sonys, Rolands, and Yamaha synthesizers would race alongside each other in sheer screaming dissonance while the African instrumentation between them be tumbled, crushed, and run over.
Also ask yourself how often noise records become sampled? That’s partially how Clipping. (punctualized) got exposure. Someone from their camp must’ve really known their stuff in trying to connect noise and rap together, taking a celebrity tragedy in “Wriggle Like A Fucking Eel” and turning It into a stripper’s anthem. It did get William Bennett’s nod of approval.
