“Streaming DJ-sets startup Chew raises £123k”
British streaming-video startup Chew, which describes itself as ‘Twitch for DJs’, has raised a first investment round of £123k shortly after graduating from the Ignite startup accelerator.
The round comes from angel investors including Friends Reunited founder Stephen Pankhurst, prolific tech investor Doug Scott, Playfair Capital’s Founder Fede Pirzio-Biroli (who invested personally), well-known angel Richard Fearn and Ignite CEO Paul Smith, and values the company at £950k.
Chew says it will use the funding to continue building its service, with the help of advisors including Music Hack Day veteran and ex-UMG man Martyn Davies, and former Rushmore FM chief executive Alex Hunter.
Chew co-founder Wil Benton told Music Ally:
“To continue to build and develop the Chew community, our focus is to partner with top DJs, artists, labels and brands on some truly unique one off broadcasts - as well as series of events.
“Our aim is to take the DJ, crowd and live streaming out of their stereotypical locations - from the dark basement clubs with sweaty crowds, to interesting spaces and venues that capture the power of the Chew platform.”
By the end of April, Chew had more than 6,000 registered DJs, with visitors watching nearly 1,700 hours of live and archived sets a week.

Stuff I wrote today (20 August 2012)
Here goes, another attempt to fire up this personal Tumblr blog. Starting with naked self-promotion, but my plan is to write other stuff too. But written elsewhere today:

(I know what you're thinking. But this was a good way to catch up on what came out during my week off. I will write Serious Journalism posts tomorrow.)
Rovio on Angry Birds Green Day deal: 'It's two big green brands...'
For The Appside... Twitter API changes: developers keep calm and carry on Netflix has signed up 1m members in UK and Ireland Seebo launching Incredible Worlds book and companion app HP Play cloud music service returns... on Android Epicland launch Black Metal backing tracks iPhone and iPad app Sky Sports iPad app adds second-screen TV features MobiTV launches Playground TV app with kids TV brands
For Disruptomatic... Kahnoodle is Pair meets Groupon. Yes, a daily deals app for couples.

OUR FIRST REVIEW
One day out in the UK market and we’re watching our twitter feed fill up with retweets of technology blogger Stuart Dredge’s super positive review of Vyclone in the Guardian. Here’s just a one of our favorite snippets from the piece that will continue to inspire and encourage our entire team.
“Facebook’s desire to pay $1bn to buy photo-sharing app Instagram has focused attention on Viddy and Socialcam, with both having been labelled ‘the Instagram of video’ and tipped for similar big-money exits. Yet a new app called Vyclone might just trump them both.”
Indeed! More than trumping a specific competitor, we’re looking to trump the current social video creation model. We believe that Vyclone will be the way people create movies. There’s nothing more powerful that multiple angles of a story. We can’t wait to see what people do with Vyclone.
P.S. We’re still waiting for our first cat movie. Who’s up for the challenge?
What annoys technology journalists about PRs
There’s a great post flying about Twitter today between PRs and journalists by Stuart Dredge - highlighting some of the poor practice going on in the tech media/PR world. This kind of post crops up now and again, but it’s always worth highlighting a few common errors some PRs make that give us all a bad name. Stuart’s post can be read in full here, check out the comments too. There’s also been a few suggestions today for a PR version of the post, which has already been kicked off in a follow up piece. From my perspective as a PR, there are few things journalists do that annoy me. The most important, and helpful, thing a journalist can do for a PR is give feedback on a pitch, client’s business or release and explain, when it’s not relevant, why. This is easier said than done, especially with a bulging inbox that is battered with an endless string of releases, but without honest feedback clients will always insist releases are sent and the cycle will never end. As I say, easier said than done - I seriously doubt any journalist out there could realistically take the time to reply to every release that hits their inbox. Everyone needs to eat and sleep. This is why it is so important PRs read and target writers with news and pitches based on their beat, and what they have covered in the past. Somewhere between well targeted pitches and solid feedback, we’ll cut down on the level of irrelevant stories. If you’re a PR and you don’t read your target titles, you need to start - or change job. If nothing else, pick up the phone and ask. If you get a no, move on. That’s why any feedback, even a no, is (or should be) as valuable to a PR as a reply saying ‘I’ll run this today’. One final point - despite some of the comments, Stuart’s post should not be read as an ‘us and them’ style piece by PRs. If you’re a PR and can’t see the value of it, read it again.

Stuart Dredge:
Here's my question: are these kinds of apps trapped in a Silicon Valley bubble? Not in the financial sense — although that $41m for Color may fuel the debate around that too. More of a cultural bubble, where it may be a little too easy to assume that all your friends and family will be quick to catch on to the same cool new apps as you.
I totally agree. I try out all of these new apps, love them, use them for a day or so, then stop because no one else I know is using them.
